Bill Fick 10th Jun 2015		Vinyl Album The Million Dollar Quartet - The Complete Million Dollar Session	This wasn't the first time a jam session like this occurred at Sun. It's just that this was the first time it was fairly well-documented, mainly because 3 of the 4 guys had major hit records at the time. When Elvis was still with Sun, Johnny Cash was in the studio when he cut "Baby, Let's Play House" & Carl Perkins was in the control room when he cut "When It Rains, It Really Pours" (as evidenced by the original session tapes). You'll have to remember that Sun was a rather informal place back then, people drifted in & out of the studio all the time. That's why you'll find people like Roy Orbison & Charlie Feathers (just to name 2) guesting on other peoples' records (uncredited)... And Billy Lee Riley's Little Green Men basically became Sun's in-house band from 1957-59 for those artists that didn't have their own band...

Bill Fick 10th Jun 2015		Vinyl Album Bill Justis - Raunchy & Other Great Instrumentals	Well, it should be listed as something to differentiate it from the Sam Phillips-owned Sun era, so as not to confuse novice collectors, if for no other reason... The US pressing of this states "Sun International Corporation - A Division of the Shelby Singleton Corp. - Nashville, Tenn. U.S.A." on both the back cover & label perimeter print. Since that's how & where this LP originated, that's how it should be listed. A collector not "in the know" might think that this LP is obstensively a re-issue of Justis' "Cloud 9" LP on Phillips Int'l, when it really isn't, due to the fact that many of the original master tapes were not used... Funny, while pouring over the fine print on this LP cover, I just noticed that there's a small image of Bill Justis poking out of the top of the girls' hair. In the 30+ years I've had this LP, I've never noticed that before (of course, I was never looking at her HAIR before...Ha!!). When Singleton bought Sun, not only did he release LPs, he also leased material to budget labels in the US (Pickwick, Share, etc...), just to confuse matters even more... SIDE NOTE: There is a version of "College Man" with lyrics that exists, same backing track as the master recording, but with a lead vocal provided by Billy Lee Riley, originally left unissued until the CD re-issue era. Killer! I'm sure it's still available on a Charly or Bear Family CD...
Bill Fick 10th Jun 2015		Vinyl Album Bill Justis - Raunchy & Other Great Instrumentals	Quite a common occurrence for Sun International LPs (which is what this should be listed under, not Sun proper). In 1969, when Shelby Singleton bought the label from Sam Phillips, he immediately started releasing LPs of classic Sun material. In fact, that first year alone Shelby issued more LPs than the original Sun Records had ever issued through it's entire existence. Sam Phillips himself only issued 12 LPs (on both Sun & Phillips Int'l) between 1957 & 1965, & 7 of them were by Johnny Cash. In his hurry to get LPs out, many mistakes were made. Wrong tapes, alternate takes and the like were inadvertently used (which actually was a boon for the rabid Sun fan).

Bill Fick 3rd Jun 2015		Vinyl Album Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire	This is Cash's 1st "best of" compilation released by Columbia. With the exception of track A4 (which was on his 1st Columbia LP), none of these songs had seen LP release yet. For me, A4 should've been substituted with another non-LP track from 1958-63 ("All Over Again", "I Got Stripes", "Locomotive Man", "Girl In Saskatoon", "Smiling Bill McCall", etc...). As compilation LPs go, it's one of the better ones.

The earlier cover (with a similar layout) was green & white, with a different photo, & no blurb about "Chug-A-Lug". Also, across the photo, printed in white, it says "Roger And Out!". I've read that there's an even earlier cover that's completely different, but I have yet to see it.

Surprised that McCartney didn't buy it, seeing as how he already has Bill Black's stand-up bass & other things... "Re-pressing" is actually a misnomer, since these recordings were actually cut into the lacquer of the disc itself. They originally never got to the pressing stage in the first place, since they were personal recordings only.
