Some songs are gems.

George Slv 13th Dec 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumBilly Strange - Great Western Themes | ReviewThis type of western music is always interesting. It must have been recorded using the Wrecking Crew studio band in Los Angeles. It is not a large orchestra like Don Costa used with Al Caiola and some songs suffer for it. Mostly it's enjoyable.
Each song is preceded by sound effects, like a cattle drive or Indians whooping it up.
They call western music lusty, and created a cover to match.

George Slv 8th Oct 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Funky Hits | The front cover says 25 Funny Funky Hits, which I take as the title. The back cover says 25 Krazy Kookie Hits, which I will take as a description. The disc label says Funky Hits.
The Little Richard songs are the Vee-Jay rerecordings.
See You Later, Alligator is a rerecording, but a heavier beat.

The sound quality is superb, and all stereo.
There is no reason to link this with the Netherlands LP with the same title.

George Slv 11th Apr 2023 | | CinemaPlatinum High School (1960) | I see three different edits listed for the film. 1:35 original at IMDB, 1:33 video from The Video Beat, and 1:31 for the 1993 VHS release.
I saw a TV showing in the 1990s but did not keep it. I recall a couple of references that I don't see in the current video. The title song was cut from that showing. It sounds like a bunch of fancy cutting for this film.
Currently the complete Video Beat edition is available on Youtube.

George Slv 11th Apr 2023 | | CinemaPlatinum High School (1960) | About the poster for Trouble At 16. It mentions Banned. I perceive this is referring to the story involving killing a student by hitting him on the neck with a baseball bat. I'd agree this is too blatant violence for a film, even if it's only spoken of. Was the film banned in 1960 in some places?

George Slv 11th Apr 2023 | | CinemaPlatinum High School (1960) | Some points of interest for music fans:
Conway Twitty was a major rock & roll star at the time for MGM, who made this movie.
Jimmy Boyd as one of Twitty's gang is the pop singer who had hits like I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and Dennis The Menace.
Cliff Edwards has a small role. For Walt Disney he did the voice of Jimminy Cricket and sang the song When You Wish Upon A Star.

George Slv 27th Mar 2023 | | DVDLe Avventure E Gli Amori Di Moll Flanders - Paramount | ReviewThis is indeed the 2.35 widescreen for the first time, in a 16:9 frame. It is the cut US edition, bringing the length down from 2:06 to 1:47. The picture quality is not sharp at all.
There are Italian and English language tracks. The Italian edition contains an original male vocal over the opening titles. No extras.
It is all region, but PAL format. I don't think NTSC DVD players will display it, but your computer likely will. Dual layer.
I think the movie is alright, with lovely sets and interesting characters. Some of the attempts at humor are just too lame though, especially with Jemmy's sidekick Squint.

George Slv 9th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMTeresa Brewer - The Thing / I Guess I'll Have To Dream The Rest | Thanks a lot My Friend Jack.
You don't mean "Bit Singles".
Does this supposedly represent all of England? There was no national chart then, only regional.
Apparently at some point she reached #20.
PS: It's more clear to me now. The book is based on wholesale sales nation-wide. It also references sheet music. There are various errors in it. The website I had found in one city must have been displaying charts contrary to copyright and was shut down.
Do you find her in it at #20?

George Slv 9th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMTeresa Brewer - The Thing / Guess I'll Have To Dream The Rest | I've posted a UK chart of some kind that shows this single at #24. Notice some other interesting records. I have no idea what that Telephone Song could be at #15.

George Slv 5th Oct 2022 | | CinemaThe Amorous Adventures Of Moll Flanders (1965) | Some comments about the titles credit for music.
The shot of Kim in a bedsheet shows a scene that has been cut from all video releases for some reason. At about 45 minutes she is changing while Richard Johnson is waiting in the kitchen. It's a bit sensuous but not revealing.
Before video releases I had a TV recording of the original edition that had this. One of my strokes of bad luck was when I decided to record a better quality Bravo telecast over that tape spot, assuming it would be the same. The telecast was the new edit. Who knows what other bits are missing.
A similar thing happened to me when Tom Jones was reedited.
Would anyone have an original edition of this Moll?
It's also not being released on any disc format. Maybe too raunchy for America?

George Slv 30th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Dimension Dolls Volume 1 | I had this album in the 1960s. Cheap from a pawn shop. Now they sell for 3 figures.
BUT I also saw a volume 2 later in the 60s. They are saying there was no volume 2.
Most of the cuts are demos by the staff singers.
Now I have a cassette of it retitled Carole King Plus, from 1991, I expect from digital.
Oh! Oh! It Started All Over Again was a great B side by Brenda Lee.

George Slv 28th Jul 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumDon Gibson - The Best Of Don Gibson | Now what's this notes about electronic stereo on this mono LP. That is physically impossible. Must pertain to the stereo LP. Note should be withdrawn.
And I'm wondering if they would have used the hit single masters on this LP.
RCA's handling of his Best LPs is strange. So many hits left out but garbage like I Think It's Best included.

George Slv 20th Jun 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumRay Stevens - Gitarzan | ReviewThis is entirely a live album from some club. Renditions are good, enough to be released as hit singles for some. Being on the Monument label they could not reuse his Mercury hits. Ahab The Arab is the short version, expanded here by audience and band sounds. This is the version where he shouts "my soul's American".
Sir Thanks-A-Lot and Bagpipes are great new songs. A fine album.

George Slv 19th May 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Drifters - Our Biggest Hits | ReviewI was never aware of this album. It turns out to be the same as Under The Boardwalk except it includes Drip Drop from the late 1950s in place of that hit. They must have just switched their attention to the Boardwalk LP soon after.
As a hits LP this one is dire. Only 3 hits. It illustrates the trouble they had after Leiber and Stoller left the company. The other staff were not very good at picking hits. B2 and B3 are rather bizarre compositions. It's possible to enjoy a few of the others.
Vaya Con Dios was a good single I thought, but radio decided it was just a remake of an earlier hit and did not promote it.

I'll bet there might be enuf interest for Paramount to issue a Blu-ray of this. For AR 2.35 you'd need that extra resolution.

George Slv 21st Sep 2021 | | CinemaC'mon, Let's Live A Little (1967) | Twistin, I've taken that into account. The copyright date is SUPPOSED TO BE the date of first publication, not production. The albums are listed as 1966. The IMDB date was somebody's reference to some New York showing in 1967. I'm taking issue with IMDB.
On the other hand: I've found the New York Times REVIEW from May 4, 1967 saying the movie opened yesterday. That actually should settle it.
This suggests the studio doesn't know how to use copyright dates, that nobody on the web knew what they were talking about, and all the album dates are nonsense.
|
George Slv 21st Sep 2021 | | CinemaC'mon, Let's Live A Little (1967) | There is too much confusion about the date. Sources always say 1967. But the title screen says 1966 so I've submitted that. A soundtrack date of 1966 should be correct, but someone also said 1965.
This film can be found at Internet Archive. Also the musical soundtrack if you dig into the files, which can be downloaded.
