Gill Sans SUBS 22nd Sep 2024 | | Classical ItemLondon Symphony Orchestra, Benjamin Britten - War Requiem | The original release in May 1963 as a Decca box set of two LPs was on SET.252 & SET.253 (stereo) and MET.252 & MET.253 (mono). Recording producer John Culshaw took great care to position the performers optimally for a stereo recording. Soloists Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Peter Pears were joined by Russian soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, meeting Britten's wish to feature soloists from Germany, Russia and Britain.
The record was hailed as a masterpiece by critics and public, quickly sold 200 thousand copies, and has remained in the catalogue ever since. This CD set has now been superceded by a remastered edition, released on the 15th of May 2006.

Gill Sans SUBS 22nd Sep 2024 | | Classical ItemThe Choir Of Norwich Cathedral - The Complete New English Hymnal | See PRCD 701 for an introduction to the Complete New English Hymnal Series.
The quality of the performance here is quite outstanding, as befits a cathedral of such high standing in worship and music. This is an all-male choir, and the boys sing to a very high standard. Punctuation, and absence of punctuation, is meticulously observed.
I was pleased to hear that the choir observe the 'Amen' wherever it is written in the score. For Hymns 19, 59, 180 they use the 2nd tune. Hymn 298 uses a slightly different harmony for "Waltham". Some hymns have sections sung unaccompanied, in unison, or divided between boys and men. Hymn 52 ends with a descant written by choir leader David Dunnett.

In Volume 9, Hymn 130 "Llanfair" concludes with an unattributed descant; Hymns 214 "Deus Tuorum Militum" and 149 "Christe Sanctorum" use the 2nd tune.

Gill Sans SUBS 16th Sep 2024 | | Classical ItemVarious Artists - 78 Classics · Volume 1 | ReviewThis CD plays many excellent recordings from the era of 78s, beautifully transferred by David Michell, and with a subtle hint of 'Enhanced Stereo' added. Sadly, no details are given of the original 78s from which these tracks are transcribed, dates of recording, dates of release, or for the most part, of accompanists, orchestras and conductors. It's no use asking Shazam, they come up with wildly irrelevant nonsense.

This is a more sprightly rendition than the earlier recording, in keeping with her intention to support British morale during the War. There is no posting of this on YT, all there being the slow, lugubrious performance.

Gill Sans SUBS 2nd Sep 2024 | | Classical ItemLilie Wollin - Chopin Favorites | Two observations on this record:
The date seems to be 1960, according to an odd finding on Wikipedia. A search there for Lilie Wollin finds there is no article for her, only a "show all results" page which shows the date and an incorrect cat. no. Click on the linked page and you go to a page which doesn't mention her or list any Crown records.
A search using the wonderful "Search on eBay" button finds a copy which is clearly a later issue of the same record and cat. no. I downloaded the images from eBay so we can see the difference in sleeves and labels.

Deller recorded it at least twice, with this recording being released also on Vanguard Classics. Listen out for an English Cadence, unusually with the orchestra clashing with the voices.
