vocalion red 26th Jul 2022 | | 78 RPMArthur Pryor's Band - Dixie / Sunny South | Prices are all subjective. It boils down to what someone is willing to pay. Don't sweat the small stuff. I don't concern myself with valuations. It's just a record, and a record that is politically incorrect to play in public in the United States today. A paradox because it was one of Abraham Lincoln's favorite tunes.

vocalion red 20th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMEarl Fuller's Rector Novelty Orchestra - Cold Turkey / 12th St. Rag | I notice that my original contribution of this disc was somehow missing from my collection list here. I re-submit this to set the matter straight. I cannot send an original label image at this time because I do not have access to a camera. I will take a label image as soon as possible.

vocalion red 24th May 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumMichel Legrand - Vienna Holiday | ReviewAlthough I played this album at least 3 times, I am somewhat disappointed in it's delivery. I am not too familiar with most of the waltzes on the record, but the rendition of Tales of the Vienna Woods on here sounds like a more modern interpretation, (one I do not care for), then the rendition performed on my parent's old album titled, "Just Your Cup Of Tea", performed by Arthur Fiedler, conductor, Boston Pops, 1960. However, the sound quality of the record is substantial. Quality you would expect from Columbia. Just my own opinion.

vocalion red 30th Nov 2016 | | 78 RPM[Mandolinen Solo] - Smiles / Till We Meet Again | It looks like your record is from Europe. Germany is a good place to start. England also, and some parts of Eastern Europe such a Czechoslovakia from what I see. Your label resembles a German one I see from the 1910's period. That's all I got.

vocalion red 27th Nov 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Hey Jude | I tend to agree FocusB, but at the time I bought this album around 1971/72/73, I was only interested in Rain. My favorites on this album were Rain, Paperback Writer, Hey Jude, and Don't Let Me Down, and maybe, Revolution. (I have to admit, I like "I Should've Known Better" as well) . All the other one's were just there. Maybe I just should'a bought 45 singles. :-)

vocalion red 27th Nov 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn | Added color enhanced photos of my original photos for attempt at more legible song titles on label, which is not that legible on actual labels as they are. Also added photo of matrix #'s side 2.

vocalion red 27th Nov 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Hey Jude | Discogs mentioned CA. on the page for this album. If they made a mistake, I will replace CA with NYC. I will do this anyway, but you might want to check on this yourself at their site. Look for the 1971 release of Apple-SW-385. I can always change it back to CA later.

vocalion red 26th Nov 2016 | | 78 RPMWeary Willie - Hallelujah! I'm A Bum / The Bum Song | Not for the Perfect Record Co. I believe Perfect changed from brown shellac to standard black shellac in the late 1930's, certainly until they went out of business. The early ones from the 1920's were brown, except for one I own from 1922 that was black, but at least most were brown. Vocalion Record Co. also pressed brown shellac discs. It was said during that era that brown shellac was better than black. I don't know how truthful that was, but I have to say that some of my Vocalions are still holding up very well in the sound quality department.
BTW, Your record should have a release date of 1928.

vocalion red 23rd Nov 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumDavid Bowie - Aladdin Sane | I have thoughtfully provided portions of the pertinent areas of my album cover that contain the letters "RE", bottom left on front and back of cover. This most likely stands for re-issue, or re-release. Gee....the other album covers posted don't have this monogram....do they ?

vocalion red 23rd Nov 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Hey Jude | Mod. transfer of images of Capitol Mfg., Apple logo, disc of Hey Jude album. Re-issue in 1971, of original issue of 1970 SW-385. (Apple SW-385)
Mastered--Bell Sound Studios, NYC
Pressed--Capitol Records Pressing Plant, Jacksonville. Illinois.
I really believe that this disc should have it's own entry, and not be amalgamated with previous or later incarnations.
|
vocalion red 20th Nov 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Hey Jude | No argument from me there. Just look at the closeup shots. "Mfg. by Capitol Records,Inc". "A Subsidiary of Capitol Industries Inc". Apple is not listed on the label....anywhere. We are talking about a Capitol product.....not an Apple product. The album you referred me to, SW-385, was manufactured by Apple. (It says so on the bottom of the label)
|
vocalion red 20th Nov 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Hey Jude | Yes, I can see that Droid, but my record was pressed by Capitol, not Apple, at The Capitol Records pressing plant in Jacksonville, Illinois. I try to be careful.
|
vocalion red 20th Nov 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Hey Jude | After further research, I have found out that my album was released in 1971. So I think that this page is not the proper place to display it because the release date for this version, as pictured at the top photo, was 1976. Just sayin'. So I was very close to the fact about when I bought this album, and I find that I was on the earlier side of my estimation.
|
vocalion red 20th Nov 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumDavid Bowie - Aladdin Sane | Congratulations gentlemen, a marvelous job of censorship in removing my posted opinion and cover images. In my opinion, AFL1-4852 does NOT belong displayed on the page for LSP-4852, because AFL1-4852 is a 1980 re-release of the 1973 original issue, which was LSP-4852. For confirmation see the Discogs webpage for this album, in all it's incarnations, (reference # [r 2080547]

vocalion red 7th Nov 2016 | | 78 RPMFrancis Herold - In A Little Spanish Town / All I Want Is You Dear | This is the first time I have seen a Grey Gull disc in brown shellac. I acquired this for my collection solely for that reason, to serve as sort of an oddity there. Personally, I don't like Grey Gulls because the later issues are said to have below average quality audio for the era due to lower quality shellac supplies they used in the late 1920's till the time they went defunct around 1934. If any out there would like to chime in on this, please feel free.

vocalion red 29th Oct 2016 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Jack Spratt / Three Blind Mice | Having sent this photo and a sound file to a place called the "internet archive", I have noticed for the first time a possible matrix number stamped on the disc. I estimate it to be S2018A. Also, miraculously, I have noticed what may be the original owners name, possibly a little girl's, written on the label, which I can't fully cipher. Touching.

vocalion red 23rd Oct 2016 | | CD AlbumGeorge Gershwin - From Gershwin's Time | The interesting thing about this CD set is that the CD's themselves are representative of the original 78 rpm discs that the original recorded music appeared on. I noticed that in the set, the earlier works are on a facsimile of the Columbia Viva-Tonal label, and the later works are on the CD with the facsimile of the Columbia Flag label. It should have been the reverse, the Flag label came before Viva-Tonal label, the earlier works should have been on that one. I believe the label design change came in 1926. I posted two genuine labels at the end of the photo sequence for comparison.
