Gill Sans SUBS ● 17th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMBand Of H.M. Scots Guards - In A Monastery Garden / In A Persian Market (1924) | Thanks, my misreading, but I stand by my conclusion about the speed.
|
Gill Sans SUBS ● 17th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMMadame Clara Butt - Abide With Me (1915) | The label does not mention a speed, but it displays the key signature as C. At the time of release the pitch of notes was about a semitone lower than today's standard pitch. If the phonograph in the "Brass Band" video is set for 78RPM, we can conclude that these early Columbia records were recorded at 78RPM.

Gill Sans SUBS ● 17th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMBand Of H.M. Scots Guards - In A Monastery Garden / In A Persian Market (1924) | The matrix numbers are followed by "Characteristic Pitch" on the labels. This would have been helpful in setting the correct playback speed on the wind-up gramophones of the time against your own piano or tuning fork, but raises the question about the prevailing pitch system.
In A Persian Market was written in D minor, and at this time French standard of A= 435 Hz was in general use. From 1936, the American Standards Association defined Concert Pitch A = 440Hz. The video above has got the pitch about right, at about a semitone lower than modern Concert pitch. If one assumes the phonograph has been set for 78RPM, then we can presume that these Winner and Edison Bell series were recorded at a nominal 78RPM.
Other labels also showed the key signature in preference to the speed, including some early HMV records, like 03156

From the Kelly On-line Database this is shown with a recording date of 18 Dec. 1911, but 78 RPM World shows single-sided HMV discs with this black label design only in 1918, the earlier series having red or dark red labels in this pattern.
