Reviewed twice in Cash Box, once as R&B and also as Spiritual. Quite a feat really as CashBox was very selective in those days, reviewing only a handful of "race" records each week through the 1940s and very early '50s. The competition must have been fierce amongst label owners and I wonder if they submitted for review only the records they really thought would be national hits or whether truckloads of heavy 78s were sent through the mail to the trade mags in the hope that some of them would be reviewed.

Anyone know anything about Rage Music Corp.? Was this yet another in-house King imprint owned by Syd Nathan, or an independent entity? It seems to be exclusively related to composer Gladyces DeJesus who was associated with Johnny Otis product at the time.

mickey rat 25th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMThe Royals - Every Beat Of My Heart / All Night Long (1952) | Recorded 8Jan52, Cincinnati. The very first record by the group later known as the Midnighters. Hank Ballard not a member yet. Lead vcls by Henry Booth and Charles Sutton, although Wynonie Harris stepped in on All Night Long just to show how it was done. Right from the start the Royals/Midnighters used an electric bass in the rhythm section and I have to say that’s what I liked about a lot of later ‘50s King R&B product, although I have to quickly say that I prefer stand-up acoustic bass on my rockabilly. Also this was the first appearance of Every Beat Of My Heart and I’d bet Johnny Otis was chuffed when Gladys Knight & The Pips had a big hit with it years later.

Looks like Billy Ward copyrighted this song early under his own name. The March 5 copyright is the official King/Federal one via Armo, the new publishing imprint shared by Syd Nathan with Ralph Bass. The really good thing about Syd Nathan's copyrights via all his thirty odd in-house imprints is that they often reflect fairly accurately (usually within a few weeks) the actual release date of the record. Every recorded track on his various labels was allocated a matrix/master number at time of recording or acquisition but only tracks actually released were filed for copyright and that was done at, or near, time of release, even if years after the recording date.

Otis was possibly still under contract with Savoy (his last recordings for Savoy were in March 1951) but he seems to have followed Ralph Bass to Federal and this is the first of a number of Otis-related recordings to appear on Federal.
