| xiphophilos ● 22nd Oct 2015 | I wasn't familiar with the British Decca series "Music While You Work," which was produced between 1943 -1947 (source). Here's some interesting background I found online: "These Decca 78s were prompted by the BBC radio programmes of the same name, but the series was quickly deleted. Throughout the existence of the Music While You Work label Decca publicity had been sketchy, to say the least. The record buying public was often unaware of what was available, so consequently some of the titles must be quite rare" (source). Billboard May 8, 1943, p. 64 makes clear that the BBC's "Music While You Work" program was relayed to more than 5,000 factories all over Britain as a way to increase productivity and morale for the war effort. The BBC discovered that workers in general preferred dance music and light entertainment; a particular favorite with workers in heavy industry were brass bands . "The right music," the BBC's pamphlet on the series says, is characterized by "familiarity, constant tone level, and rhythm." | |
