annaloog ● 25th Dec 2024 | | BookDon Strack - Union Pacific Locomotive Directory 2000 (2000) | Is the date here 2000, or 2007-2012 as shown on the image?
annaloog ● 12th Dec 2024 | | BookIan Mackintosh - The Sandbaggers (1978) | It's been a few decades since I watched this series on American TV, but as I recall I rather enjoyed it.
annaloog ● 25th Nov 2024 | | BookIan Simmons - The Fortean Times Book Of Life's Losers (1996) | I don't recall seeing the ad for this, not surprising though, after some 28 years. If I can find them, I'll go through my 1996 FT issues. I have a couple of other books in this series, which IIRC came as a bonus with the magazine.

annaloog ● 14th Nov 2024 | | BookTerry Wilson - Let It Be: The Making Of The Beatles' Final Album (2024) | Thanks, I had thought of that - both entries indicate paperback.

annaloog ● 2nd Nov 2024 | | BookElisabeth Sanxay Holding - Net Of Cobwebs (1946) | I found a copy of this some years ago at a Goodwill thrift bookshop, complete with dust jacket, though the laminate is peeling a bit. Not many of these early Bantam paperbacks had these DJs; my 1982 Hancer price guide identifies less than 10 of them.

annaloog ● 24th Oct 2024 | | BookCaptain W. E. Johns - Worrals Flies Again (1943) | I'd think that the 'real' authorship of, say, Mark Twain is fairly well known. That of, say, Carolyn Keene *, Saki, or Charity / Lee Blackstock (among many others), not as well known. Sometimes, it's a matter of how far the book uploader is willing to go to research the author, though I'd expect it's much easier to accept the book-in-hand at face value. Eventually, given time, patience and enough prodding, the better-known authors and their pen names will be assembled together.
* H'mmm, no BBcode link for pen names.

Quote:
... I was told 10 years ago we use real name and then indicate pen name in the appropriate field - with no exceptions.
The guide to adding books (also) states, Do please add books using a single canonical version of an author's name, even if there is a variation of the name on the book cover. The name could be that which the author is best known, or how the author is referred to on Wikipedia, eg D. H. Lawrence, William Shakespeare, Margaret Atwood. [my emphasis]
The problem I see with using the "real name" (as here) is that it is not always obvious, and it's far easier to use the pen name, since that is ordinarily on the cover or title page. The copyright holder sometimes, but not always, is the author's real name.

annaloog ● 20th Sep 2024 | | BookClifford Knight - Death Of A Big Shot (1951) | My copy is an ex-library copy, the dust jacket of which apparently had been discarded except for a clipping of the plot synopsis (presumably from one of the flaps) which had been pasted on the first page.
annaloog ● 7th Sep 2024 | | BookBill Strutton - Doctor Who And The Zarbi (1978) | That was my take also ... I have moved the images of several different (mostly undated) printings of the Signet Bored Of The Rings to separate entries once I found enough info. to distinguish them.
annaloog ● 6th Sep 2024 | | BookGene Wolfe - The Island Of Doctor Death And Other Stories And Other Stories | Not credited on this edition, the cover painting artist is Don Maitz.
annaloog ● 5th Sep 2024 | | BookPiet Prins - Scout: The Secret Of The Swamp (2000) | In response to a correction request, the English language translation shows the book's title in English, corresponding with the cover image. The "English title" field shows the original publication's Dutch title.

annaloog ● 16th Aug 2024 | | BookLeslie Charteris - The Saint Intervenes (1945) | This is Avon 71 (cat. no. added, and this title added to my Avon list) — the cat. no. should be printed on the book's spine * ... and it is listed in the catalog listing in my copies of Avon 107 and Avon 109.
* Avon 1 - 40 are not numbered, but the cat. no. may be found in the Avon catalog listing printed on the inside back cover of these early editions.
annaloog ● 5th Aug 2024 | | BookSusannah Leigh - Journey To The Lost Temple (1991) | JMO, I seriously doubt that an illustrator is the same as an author (a graphic novel may be an exception). At any rate, John Blackman's name does not appear on the cover.
annaloog ● 24th Jul 2024 | | BookJames White - The Secret Visitors (1967) | Thanks, that confirms my conclusion. I have combined the two entries.

annaloog ● 28th Jun 2024 | | BookLord Dunsany - The King Of Elfland's Daughter (1969) | There is, perhaps, some room for confusion. Acc. to the Guide (for) Adding Books,
Quote:
Do please add books using a single canonical version of an author's name, even if there is a variation of the name on the book cover. The name could be that which the author is best known, or how the author is referred to on Wikipedia ....
I don't suggest changing, say, all 170 entries (so far) of Jack Vance titles to John Holbrook Vance — the author is "best known" as we now have it ... similarly with Lord Dunsany.
annaloog ● 28th Jun 2024 | | BookD. H. Lawrence - The Virgin And The Gipsy (1988) | "Gipsy" is a variant spelling. This Wikipedia page shows a photo of (what is claims as) the first UK edition.
annaloog ● 28th Jun 2024 | | BookDenis Gifford - The Great Cartoon Stars: A Who's Who! (1988) | Oddly (perhaps), of all the animated cartoon characters that ever existed, from the early (silent) days of Gertie the Dinosaur and Krazy Kat & Ignatz through recent years, those selected for the dust jacket came from Fleischer Studios.
annaloog ● 26th Jun 2024 | | BookAgatha Christie - The ABC Murders (1965) | Responding to a correction request, Wikipedia has the title as "The A. B. C. Murders". agathachristie.com, whose connection to the late author (or her estate) is doubtful, has the title as "The ABC Murders", omitting the stops. Which to choose? Does it matter? . . . Perhaps an entry for the original edition might resolve the matter.
<edit> FWIW, this 1936 Dodd, Mead edition as listed on ebay shows the title with stops.
annaloog ● 16th Jun 2024 | | BookJennifer Adams - Dracula (2014) | At $9.99, that's (roughly *) $1 per number . . . not much value for money, esp. when you can teach your offspring for 'free'.
* John Lennon might have said, "rugby".
