This compendium of hymns has been the mainstay of British church choirs for well over a century. The title and the publisher are the same. No individual is credited as the author so I take it that a committee of Hymns Ancient and Modern can be credited with this.
The history of the developments in English Church Music during this period is summarised in the four-page Introduction, the book then proceeding to a brief description of each of the named composers and of the printed scores which make up the greater part of the book.
No contents page but four sections:
One Church, One Faith, Two Cultures? - A study of the relationship between Anglican clergy and the people in the urban north-west, 1881-1930, by Chris Ford
Choral Church Music Through The Ages - a lecture-recital given by Dr. Mike Kirby and Renaissance
Roman Catholic Emergence Into Public Life - as reflected in the architecture of Catholic churches in the nineteenth century in the Diocese of Salford, by Tony McBride
John Bennett and the Beginnings of Stockport Methodism, by E. A. Rose
