Gill Sans SUBS 25th Sep 2023 | | Classical ItemCharles Vignoles - Side A SECTIONBREAK Hear My Prayer / Side B SECTIONBREAK O For The Wings Of A Dove | An interesting find: Charles Vignoles is a name that sounds destined for great things, starting with this recording of the popular coupling by Mendelssohn, but so far he hasn't been named on another record here. These two songs gave Ernest Lough a smash hit in 1927.
Where did the title "Chorister From Canterbury Cathedral" come from? It's not on the label, and unless it is on the sleeve I feel this 78 does not need a title.

Gill Sans SUBS 25th Sep 2023 | | Classical ItemSusi Jeans - Susi Jeans Plays Music By Gerber, Herschel, Schmidt, Pach And Kropfreiter On The Organ Of St. David's Cathedral Dyfed (1977) | I wonder who this Walter Pach who arranged "Herr Jesu Christ, dich zu uns wend" could have been; I cannot find him on the 'web. The hymn has its own entry on Wikipedia, but none of the links take us to Pach. The music library at St. David's Cathedral might shed some light; Henderson's Directory of Composers for Organ does not mention him.
J, S, Bach, Walter, Böhm, Krebs, Scheidt and many others since have made their own settings for the hymn.

Gill Sans SUBS 7th Sep 2023 | | Classical ItemChœur De Chambre Accentus - Poulenc: Figure Humaine (2001) | The unaccompanied choral work Figure Humaine started the BBC Proms programme last week, with some notes by Sir Simon Rattle in which he explained that the piece was written in 1943 during the German occupation: the score was smuggled out to England, the premiere performance being given live on air by the BBC Singers, while the text of Paul Éluard's anti-occupation poem was dropped over Paris from RAF aircraft as a propaganda measure.
