TV Series
Notes Comedic talent competition series combining genuine contestants with recurring performers. A panel of celebrities judged the acts, with particularly poor performers being ushered off stage after a panelist struck a large gong. Although primarily a comedy series, the series did feature genuine performers, some making their national TV debut. Examples include Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman), Mare Winningham (who went on to become a noted film actress), and Danny Elfman's pop group Oingo Boingo. The original series ran between 1976 and 1980 in both a network version and a syndicated evening version; creator and producer Barris hosted both versions except for a period when Gary Owens hosted the nighttime version. A revival aired in 1988-1989. Additional revival attempts included Extreme Gong, which aired in 1998-1999 and a reimagined Gong Show hosted by Dave Attell that aired briefly in 2008. The Gong Show is notable as the only US game show to have a motion picture spinoff, The Gong Show Movie, which was released in 1980. The beauty pageant spoof The $1.98 Beauty Show is considered a spin-off of The Gong Show. Comments and Reviews
