23skidoo 19th Apr 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And His Comets - Twistin' Knights At The Roundtable (1962) | Aside from being Haley's first live album release, there are some interesting aspects to this. It was recorded over the course of a couple of weeks during a gig at the Roundtable in NYC where apparently they primarily played "new" songs like these rather than favourites like Rock Around the Clock. That said, Haley had recorded a number of songs here for Orfeon Records in Mexico, but due to contracts they had (at this point) never been released in the US, so Twist Marie, One-Two-Three Twist, Caravan Twist, Whistlin' and Walkin' Twist and Florida Twist were all new to American listeners; Florida Twist had actually been a substantial hit south of the border (and remains a party staple down there to this day), so there was one "greatest hit" in this batch. Closing track is a duet vocal by guitarist Johnny Kay and steel guitarist Billy Williamson. Franny Beecher, Haley's legendary 1950s guitarist, had actually quit the Comets earlier in the year but agreed to come back for this set, resulting in a twin-lead guitar sound for the Comets on this occasion. The drummer for this set wasn't the Comets' regular drummer but rather Sticks Evans who I believe was a member of Joey Dee and the Starliters (please correct me if I'm wrong).

23skidoo 10th Apr 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Six Fat Dutchmen - "Ten Fabulous Hits" (1967) | The sleeve and spine give the title as "Ten Fat Hits" but the label does indeed say "Ten Fabulous Hits"

23skidoo 10th Apr 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumCarol Hensel - Carol Hensel's Exercise And Dance Program Volume 2 | The track listing is in error. It has the songwriters listed as the artists. Correct artist should be Carol Hensel (who provides narration and instructions), who is backed by studio musicians. Corrections submitted.

23skidoo 25th Mar 2023 | | Vinyl Album[no artist listed] - It's OK To Say No! (1985) | Oddly, the label of the Canadian pressing does not have the ! in the title

23skidoo 4th Feb 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Sportsmen Quartet - Barbershop Ballads (1959) | The Notes don't mention the gold marbled vinyl. I have that version too - is that a variant or was it the standard release? Also my sleeve appears to have a die-cut triangle window at bottom left, both sides, allowing the vinyl to be seen. I have no way of knowing if this perhaps was only for the coloured vinyl "variant" - on the rear sleeve the window is cut right where there is no text so it doesn't obscure anything, and on the front all that's cut out is part of the chair, not any of the, ahem, selling feature of the record! Any ideas?

23skidoo 29th Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumLesley Parsonson - Fitness Fun With Lesley Vol. 1 (1978) | Discogs gives a release date of 1974 for this album which doesn't work with the music featured. The Saskatchewan Archival Information Network says 1978. It actually says Feb. 14, 1978 but I'm not sure if that's the date of recording or release so I just corrected to 1978.
23skidoo 27th Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Bop That Never Stopped (1983) | "Joey Welze" is Joey Welz (who is also the piano player on the sleeve front). Likely a spelling error because the tracks listed are among the better known ones released by Welz.
23skidoo 22nd Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Brothers Four - By Special Request (1965) | Is it confirmed that the B4 title was indeed "Frogg"? By this time they'd recorded a "Frogg No. 2" and usually added a "No. 1" to the first song's title on post-1962 releases.
23skidoo 22nd Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Brothers Four - Greatest Hits (1962) | On the label they retitled "Frogg" as "Frogg No. 1" because by this point a sequel ("Frogg No. 2") had been released.
23skidoo 10th Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumTapani Kansa - Konserttilavalla (1979) | C1 composer credit has an error as Bill Haley did not write Rock Around the Clock (credit should read De Knight, Freedman)

23skidoo 7th Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumABC Children's Chorus - Songs For Children ... By Children (1966) | I bought my copy just purely because they categorized These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ as a kid’s song! And this was years before the Mini-Pops!
23skidoo 7th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - One Piece At A Time (1985) | There may be others, but as far as I've so far been able to find, this may be the only Johnny Cash-branded vinyl album (as opposed to a multi-artist compilation) to include the infamous "Chicken in Black" which Columbia appears to have kept single-exclusive otherwise.
23skidoo 7th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - Everybody Loves A Nut (1966) | Gotta hand it to Johnny Cash - not many other stars of his stature could pull off an out-of-the-blue comedy album. Did Elvis do that? No! (No jokes about his soundtracks, please. LOL) I kinda wish others had done the same. I don't know if this album was particularly successful for Cash, but of course we know he had later success with A Boy Named Sue and A Piece at a Time, both of which would have fit in fine on this record.

23skidoo 6th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And His Comets - Live In Paris (1985) | 8 years later I noticed some clumsy wording in my original Notes. Should clarify that while Saints is on the album twice, they're different performances, not duplicated tracks.
23skidoo 6th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl Album[no artist listed] - Top Of The Pops: Vol. 1 (1968) | This seems to be the appropriate place to ask: was there an actual connection with the TV show, or did they just use the same title? One would think the BBC would have copyrighted "Top of the Pops" as a title, but you never know.

23skidoo 21st Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumIngrid Bergman - The Human Voice (1960) | The original recording: [YouTube Video]
The TV production is also on Youtube but it's beyond the scope of this index. I confirmed it was from 1967 so well after this recording came out.
23skidoo 21st Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumIngrid Bergman - The Human Voice (1960) | Bergman also did a TV production of this one-woman play. Not sure if it was before or after doing this recording.
23skidoo 19th Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Romeo & Juliet Original Soundtrack Album (1968) | Mine is a variant with cat# ST 8-2993. Two differences: the front sleeve has a "Gold Record Award" certfication, and the typeface on the green label differs somewhat from here.
23skidoo 17th Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Irish Rovers - The Irish Rovers Special (1972) | The NC 418 cat# was also used on the sleeves for this later K-Tel release.
23skidoo 17th Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 20 Great Italian Love Songs (1974) | Oddly the sleeve cat # NC418, was also used on the labels of a K-Tel International-branded Irish Rovers album (q.v.).
23skidoo 9th Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBilly Connolly - Raw Meat For The Balcony (1977) | Oddly Polydor's UK cassette release made the title a bit more "louder" by adding an exclamation mark ("Raw Meat for the Balcony!"). In case anyone's curious, the live recording includes a heckler interruption; Billy replies by requesting an order of raw meat be sent up to the balcony!
23skidoo 1st Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJerry Lee Lewis - The Greatest Live Show On Earth (1964) | Interestingly, around 2000 a collection of live recordings recorded in Paris in 1958 used a very similar cover design.
23skidoo 1st Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 1950's Rock & Roll Revival (1970) | I've been informed by some collectors that some copies of this LP apparently included a replica poster or concert program as an insert. Unknown if this was just for promo copies or regular release.
23skidoo 11th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJohn Fitzgerald Kennedy - A Memorial Album: Highlights Of Speeches Made By Our Beloved President (1963) | I have a Canadian release on the Masterseal label, A Memorial Tribute - I don't think it's the same production as this (different cover, etc) but if anyone know different, please feel free to link the two.
23skidoo 11th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJohn Fitzgerald Kennedy - A Memorial Tribute (1964) | I'd have to have both albums to compare, but I believe this is a different recording/release than the American A Memorial Album.
23skidoo 2nd Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - La Grande Storia Del Rock (1982) | Are these RCA studio recordings or taken from TV? The order of tracks on the B side looks like the song order from his final appearance on Ed Sullivan.
23skidoo 2nd Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And The Comets - 20 Greatest Hits (1982) | This is a bit of info for the collectors to break down the origins of the tracks on this (since a number of tracks here Haley recorded for both Sonet and Orfeon).
A1-A5; B1-B5 are Sonet tracks from 1968 (basically the complete contents of the Sonet Grand Prix release, Biggest Hits). The rest date from Orfeon Mexico in 1966 and the albums Bill Haley a Go Go and Whiskey a Go Go, for the most part (one or two might be from EPs). All are studio recordings but a few have overdubbed applause as part of the "fake live" trend of the 60s. B6-B7 feature lead vocals by guitarist Johnny Kay (who sadly passed away about a month ago), B9 is a dual vocal by Kay and sax player Rudy Pompilli.

23skidoo 30th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumAndre Kostelanetz With Johnny Cash - The Lure Of The Grand Canyon (1961) | Just to close a discussion loop: here is a link to 45cat's listing for a 2-EP set covering the A side and part of the B, but omitting the Johnny Cash track. I wonder if that's on another EP?
23skidoo 20th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJack Elliott - Jack Elliott Sings The Songs Of Woody Guthrie (1963) | For some reason the name "Woody" is being misspelled pretty consistently as "Woodie" on these albums. Corrections submitted.
23skidoo 20th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumCast (The Electric Company) - The Electric Company (1974) | Submitted corrections for the artist credits. The album sleeve credits individual track performers for most. Also, the label branding is Sesame Street.
