23skidoo 27th Nov 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And His Comets - The Original Masters (1986) | This stands as likely the only Bill Haley album to be advertised as a TV mail-order special:

23skidoo 19th Oct 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And The Comets - Rock-a-Round The Clock King (1964) | A few more thing learned recently: Don't Mess Around and The Wobble were covers of singles originally recorded by the Orioles. I don't know if any of the others originated from elsewhere other than the well known tracks at the start; "Hugh" is an original instrumental the group also recorded for Orfeon in Mexico around the same time.

23skidoo 18th Oct 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumFats And The Chessmen - Let's Twist | Label title is actually "Let's Twist". Correction submitted.
23skidoo 15th Sep 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumAllan Sherman - My Son, The Nut (1963) | My copy has a sticker attached to front "Including Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter from Camp)"
23skidoo 22nd Aug 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumMarvin Rainwater - Whatever Happened To Marvin Rainwater (1981) | Track B8 misspelled the name Kris Kristofferson. This is how it is on the label, however.
23skidoo 3rd Aug 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumFamous Theatre Company And The Hollywood Studio Orchestra - Tale Spinners: Gulliver In Lilliput (1964) | Fans of Gerry Anderson may recognize the name Denise Bryer as she was one of the main voice actors on some of his early pre-Supermarionation shows like Four Feather Falls and Adventures of Twizzle. In 1977 she again did voice acting for an animated production of Gulliver's Travels. PS. Located a year of release; added.

23skidoo 2nd Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumLawrence Welk And His Champagne Music - Lawrence Welk Favorites (1957) | My copy is a variant - a promotion for the 1957 Swept-Wing Dodge. No label difference. Front sleeve has an affixed sticker "The MOOSE is Going Places with Dodge!" and rear sleeve is an ad for the vehicle.
23skidoo 2nd Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumSesame Street Cast - Concert On Stage (1977) | Copyright date on rear sleeve is 1977 not 1975. Correction submitted.
23skidoo 2nd Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBilly Connolly - Wreck On Tour (1985) | Connolly did a tour by this title (this was probably recorded during it). At the time I lived in Saskatoon, Canada and I recall being very disappointed when his performance there during this tour ended up being cancelled. I did eventually get to see him perform twice in Calgary in the 1990s though.
23skidoo 2nd Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBilly Connolly - A Change Is As Good As Arrest (1983) | Track B6 might sound familiar to anyone who remembers the short-lived 1990s sitcom Pearl that starred Malcolm McDowell. Billy guest starred in one episode and I think he played an old friend of Malcolm's character. And during his appearance he and Malcolm did a great and unexpected duet of I Wish I Was in Glasgow. By this time Billy was best known (certainly in America) for his acting and stand up comedy and had more or less retired the music aspect of his shows, so it was probably a bit of a revelation. Although he did an instrumental album of banjo music later on, and maybe some one-off recordings, this was I think Billy's last album with a substantial number of songs.

23skidoo 24th May 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And The Comets - Rock N Roll (1976) | Here's a TV ad for the album from 1976 (uploaded to Youtube by the person who designed the commercial). The 1977 date originally placed here was a guess, so I have submitted a correction to change it to 1976. This might be for the US release of this album, which I don't believe has been indexed yet.

23skidoo 23rd May 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Happy Days Fonzie Favorites (1976) | One bit of information worth noting: Track 11, which features an uncredited impressionist intoning various Fonzie catchphases, plays over the instrumental version of the theme song, which I don't think had otherwise been released previously. The vocal version had been a single (odd they didn't credit the performers on this album), but I don't think the instrumental had yet been released.
23skidoo 7th Apr 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumDavid McCallum - Music: A Bit More Of Me (1966) | I wonder how many fans of McCallum (RIP) felt cheated because of the album being instrumental? The inclusion of the Batman Theme is ironic given the decision turn Man from UNCLE into a spoof (a direct result of the popularity of Batman) ended up killing the show that made him famous!
23skidoo 1st Apr 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumOlivia Newton-John - If Not For You (1971) | As I have seen in other indexing, the title as given on the label is usually the one used. It looks like the actual title "If Not for You" is not actually on the label, just "Olivia Newton-John". Should that be indexed as the title for this release instead (obviously linked to later issues that use "If Not For You")? I see the Pye issue in the UK does this too. German Polydor uses the If Not for You title on the label.

23skidoo 9th Mar 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And His Comets - Shake, Rattle And Roll (1955) | No one seems to have ever put in a correction on the track order. Will do so now.
Done Mod.
23skidoo 5th Mar 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Mandel - M*A*S*H (1973) | Is it known why Jamal's jazz instrumental version of the theme, not used in the movie at all, replaced the original vocal by The Mash? Did somebody get nervous about the song being called "Suicide is Painless"? They didn't even use the instrumental version from the TV show which at least would have made sense.

23skidoo 11th Feb 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumAl (He's The King) Hirt - The Horn Meets "The Hornet" (1966) | Incorrect album cover for this title. Correction submitted
23skidoo 30th Jan 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And His Comets - Golden Greats (1985) | Although the tracks all date from the 1950s, the cover photo of the Comets came from a 1968 UK TV appearance; only the sax player and Haley of course appear on any of the recordings.
23skidoo 29th Jan 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumBob Booker And George Foster - The New First Family, 1968: A Futuristic Fairy Tale (1966) | Canadian pressing has a black and white sleeve.

23skidoo 29th Jan 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumZon - Astral Projector (1978) | Bought for the cover, I will not lie!
23skidoo 3rd Jan 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Country And Western Bonanza (1963) | The Canadian version of this on Arc flips Side A with Side B.
23skidoo 14th Dec 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumChuck Berry - Chuck Berry Greatest Hits | For some reason, a cropped version of the sleeve photo was used for the cover of an LP by guitarist Samuel Altonn (qv - this is for the cassette release but it was issued on vinyl too).
23skidoo 14th Nov 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - Mean As Hell (1966) | This album was an edited down version of the 2-LP set Johnny Cash Sings The Ballads Of The True West
23skidoo 14th Nov 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - Everybody Loves A Nut (1966) | Track B6 incorporates Happy Birthday to You, of note because at the time of the album's release it was still in copyright.
23skidoo 13th Sep 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 25 Rock Revival Greats Vol. 2 (1972) | Although these K-Tel releases were far from "top of the line" with regards to sound quality, and as indicated some tracks are truncated. But they were still valuable. When I was a kid it was albums like this that first exposed me to many of these classic songs.
23skidoo 13th Sep 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 25 Rock Revival Greats (1972) | As with Vol 2, some tracks have been edited down in order to get all to fit on a single record. I always wanted one of those Record Selector gimmicks they advertised on these records. When I finally got one (by way of a garage sale), of course it didn't work properly!
23skidoo 4th Jul 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And The Comets - Rock Around The Clock (1970) | To correct ppint's comment, this was a studio album, not live recordings. Hallmark did licence the live album that was recorded the day before this studio set. One of the more iconic Haley album cover images, taken from an appearance on Thank Your Lucky Stars in 1964. Musicians pictured are (L to R) Al Rappa (bass), Bill Haley, Rudy Pompilli (sax), Dave Holly (drums), Johnny Kay (who passed away a few months ago, guitar) and just barely visible (and cropped out of the Pickwick reissues of this album) is Nick Nastos (a.k.a. Nick Masters) on steel. Holly and Kay actually aren't on this album, while Nastos had graduated to lead by the time it was recorded.

23skidoo 4th Jul 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And The Comets - Razzle Dazzle (1971) | I recently discovered there is a black-and-white cover variant for this album.
23skidoo 2nd Jun 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumBobby Curtola - Shake Rock & Roll (1973) | This was a limited-run series that aired in 1973 as part of something called Saturday Special. One of the key episodes for me was the November 1973 episode that featured an appearance by Bill Haley and the Comets. It made me a lifelong fan of the band. This album features only recordings by Curtola, not his guests. Maybe someday someone will release a collection of the guest performances.
23skidoo 19th Apr 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumBill Haley And His Comets - Haley's Juke Box (1960) | Haley's second album for Warner Bros was full-out country album as Haley considered himself more a country singer and of course that's where he started (one of the tracks here, Candy Kisses, is a re-recording of one of Haley's first singles from 1948!). After this LP and the end of the Warners contract, the Comets started recording mostly dance-craze albums in Mexico; Haley wouldn't try this experiment again until 1971's Rock Around the Country for Sonet. It's an excellent album but probably not really what people were looking for from Bill Haley in 1960.
