Madhouse - Biography

Madhouse is principally Prince and Eric Leeds performing all instruments on the LP 8 with additional artist Shelia E. and Levi Seacer, Jr only on two tracks from the LP 16.

The band was established in 1986 when Prince wanted to explore his interest in jazz. He recorded tracks that were only assigned numbers and had Eric Leeds over dub sax over it. In 1987 released 2 albums entitled 8 &16. That same year Prince assembled a group to perform as Madhouse to open for Prince on his "Sign 'O' The Times" Tour in Europe using members on Prince's tour group. The live group was Prince (Drums, Bass, Keyboards), Eric Leeds, (Baritone Sax, Flute)
Dr. Fink (keyboards), Lei Seacer, Jr (Bass) and Dale Alexander (Drums) and they performed their first show in on May 8, 1987 in Stockholm, Sweden.

Prince used two alter egos in relation to Madhouse. On their first album 8 had a press release extoling Madhouse as the brainchild of an Atlanta keyboardist named Austra Chanel, which of course is actually Prince. The other was John Lewis who is credited as the Drummer, but again it was Prince.
