Val Lewton: The Man In The Shadows (2007)
Usually I think the directors seem to get much too much credit. Hitchcock this Hitchcock that. He was hired after someone else wrote and worked to produce the picture, to direct it. They were not "Hitchcock's films". Now here is the opposite.

The Draughtsman's Contract (1982)
Rated 6/10
A review at IMDB calls this "A bizarre, quite unique period film". It's an interesting experience, but certainly an adult film. In 1700s England a draughtsman (an "artist", for Pete's sake) is hired by a wealthy landowner [feelthie riche aristocrat] to make a few paintings of his estate. Now the draftsman for payment demands sexual favors from the ladies of the family. That's fine they says. But these rats have a devious plot in mind and this draftsman is in danger. Now you can spend your time at IMDB learning to understand what you just saw.
There are horror style elements by the time it's over.
They got this cute little guy who plays a "nymph" on the estate. Fully naked and painted green, he keeps showing up in humorous places. Hey when do we get a female like that, we aren't all homo. I can think of one actress ...
The sex scenes are not your standard type, and are not sensuous.
It's a quality production, you might be morbidly curious.

Peggy Scott And Jo Jo Benson - Soulshake
Review
Soulshake on this album is a very unfortunate mess of a mix. Stereo balance is way off. You need to listen to the mono single. But that is not being reissued. Fortunately some discerning people (ahem) at Youtube are posting the single. Next the reissuers need to get the clue. It is only available in this stereo.

The rest of the album is great. 9 stars (like uh 11 out of 12).
I think that's a sitar in the entire album.
It's possible that a CD reissue has been remastered (really) to correct that.

To try to construct the episodes as much as I know, the female co-hosts:
June 13 - July 4: Teresa Brewer
July 11: Gloria DeHaven
Next 2 shows: Peggy King.
Final 6 shows: Jaye P. Morgan.
If that's all there were the last show would have been September 5.

Gene Pitney - Only Love Can Break A Heart
Review
One of the main classic LPs of the era, along with Orbison's Crying. On this one they made the effort to not include any "weak sisters" like on his first Many Sides LP. They pretty well succeeded. So many memorable songs beyond the hits, like Tower Tall, If I Didn't Have A Dime, Donna Means Heartbreak. The one that does not fit for me is B3. The title song seems to be his greatest hit. But I like B1 better yet.

Teresa Brewer - Her Heart-Touching Love Songs & Famous Golden Hits
Review
This contains a wide range of her Coral recordings, but certainly not a definitive collection of her hits. Two albums were marketed on TV in 1985 and sold by mail. For example 09 is from her Hawaii LP. 5,17, 23 were from her Naughty Naughty Naughty LP. 06 is of course her Coral rerecording. 21 is the Ferlin Husky hit "Gone", which had been unreleased by Teresa.

This is issued as a digital download but also exists as a CD. I currently see it at Amazon, and I'm not sure how legitimate it is or whether they even made the CD from mp3s or what?
This company apparently is copying the old vinyl LPs. They also call it "remastered", which is the wrong term.

The Legend Of The 7 Golden Vampires (1974)
The 7 Brothers Meet Dracula was the US edit. Scenes were rearranged and it was shortened. It actually improved the pacing, starting off with fast vampire action. Julie Ege had been Miss Norway, and here joins this vampire hunting expedition just to travel to a northern destination. She might be sorry.

Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1974)
Rated 9/10
One of the movie projects of Brian Clemens, who had been producing The Avengers TV series. His other for Hammer Films was Dr Jekyll And Sister Hyde. He wrote the stories himself. This is a variation on the standard vampire theme, where the vampires don't drain the blood but the youth. See the young maidens after they have been drained. The film has some weaker spots in the screenplay but it turns out satisfying and has a "cult following" (the more discerning fans, ahem). The climactic sword fight in the sumptuous mansion (see the trailer credits picture) is especially colorful and dramatic.

Perry Presents (1959)
Here's an episode from July 11 at the Internet Archive with Gloria DeHaven co-hosting.
Added photo (kinescope capture).
In later episodes Jaye P. Morgan was the female co-host.

As for IMDB, research on this series is a work in progress, and the one person who created the IMDB entry does not have it all right. That's probably the person who posted at Internet Archive.
Here's more information written at This Is My Story: "She and Tony Bennett were cast to co-host "Perry Presents" - a New York-based summer replacement show for the Perry Como Saturday night time slot - in the summer of 1959. Teresa only appeared for the first four weeks of the show. After her departure, other performers - Jaye P. Morgan, for instance - filled in for her." Teresa's last show was July 4.
There were at least 13 shows.

Review
Mainly beautiful ballads, arranged by Frank Hunter and Stan Applebaum. Side 1 is the rise, side 2 is the fall. The cover says:
"Here is an album with an exciting difference. For the first time, by the use of carefully selected songs, this recording tells the complete story of a love affair--from the thrill of the first meeting, through the joyous times together and vows forevermore, to the lovers' parting and thoughts of days gone by."
It's actually a similar concept to Bobby Curtola's 1965 "A Love Story In Stereo".

The Emerald Forest (1985)
Review
After John Boorman conquered the world with his legendary Excalibur, he went on to this pet project of his, using the setting of the Amazon forest. In the true story, Bill Markham's son is kidnapped by a jungle tribe, and ten years later Markham hunts for him.
The potential is there being in the exotic forest, but I found that the screenplay was not strong and gripping enough, so it is on the mild side. There is topless nudity of tribal women, but the most significant is Tommy's girlfriend Kachiri working as a "topless waitress" in a bar, from where they rescue her. When scenes like that were cut the story was not so clear.
There is a message here about saving the rainforest. Note that in 1990 environmentalists were crying that by 2000 the entire Amazon forest would be cut down. I know how totally incompetent their (non)thinking is. I was involved with some. Besides his greatness, John Boorman has some serious faults.

The Mar-Keys - Last Night
How would you rate this album overall?

Youtube post of 3 of these songs, B6, A6, A1.

At the start their personnel included Booker T & the MGs in the rhythm section. Then Booker T separated and the Mar-Keys' further records were weaker, like Sack O' Woe. They did not particularly have further hits.

Sueño Profundo - Noche De Lobos
Review
The only DVD anyone has issued of this 1990 made-for-cable Canadian movie starring Megan Follows. Spain was interested because Damon D'Oliveira is a Portuguese Canadian. It includes Castellano and English audio. The copy I got was not technically top quality and was hard or impossible to play except on my computer drive. Once played the quality is okay, but closer to VHS than to DVD quality.

Review
A beautiful album arranged by Frank Hunter, who had experience with exotica music. New releases for her at the time were A1, B3, B4, B6. Two were renditions of current British hits - A6 and B5. A3 and B2 were recent American hits for others. Four others were popular standards.
But you can't leave the subject until you hear this Little Things Mean A Lot. It's the most awesome recording.
At this Youtube link you'll hear it plus Welcome Home, part of a 4-song set from GeoSilverAway.

Review
From the days when fans were hungry for videos of old uncommon material, this issue of Hammer's last production of that era was of interest. A 4:3 format, it actually was not even panned and scanned, of all things dey jis pointeded the scanner to the middle of da widescreen picture. So dat in the restaurant scene with Cybill and Angela Lansbury in opposite chairs, ve don't even see their heads on the sides. In a widescreen composition of Gould climbing out the train window as it approaches a tunnel, we don't see Gould or the train at the right side. There was a different US 4:3 videotape at the time which was panned.

The Phantom Of The Opera [1983] - Screencraft Video
An early video release which was hard to find, now available on DVD. This tape had an error in that two reels of film were put in the reverse sequence, in the section where the phantom is becoming acquainted with Maria the singer.
In fact I was the only collector I knew who had a copy, and I traded some corrected copies with US collectors. Those copies may well have been passed beyond that and led to more interest in a release.

It's cute the way these releasers claim copyrights on their items when they do not own the copyright to the movie. Many of these Hammer films were not copyrighted in Canada at the time. They are public domain. "Grey market" does not mean illegal.
When I was learning about Hammer in the 1990s and saw this POW video at the rental store, it gradually dawned on me that this was The Secret Of Blood Island. So it was a very valuable find.
