LaurenceD SUBS 17th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThee Midniters - Thee Midniters | Added scans for cover back and labels. Regarding the CH-666 number on the labels, I wonder if somebody made a mistake when doing the layout - that happens to be the same cat# for their "Land Of A Thousand Dances" single: CH-666

LaurenceD SUBS 17th Sep 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumWillie Tidwell - Willie Tidwell | Willie Tidwell (a band, not an individual) was one of the first bands to bring punk rock to the Salt Lake City club scene. They played frequently at The Roxy (248 S. Main).
Here are some recollections from band member Henry Reese, from a 1989 issue of SLUG magazine: slugmag 6/89
I don't have a precise date for this record release (their only one I think), but based on Reese's comments it would seem to be from 1978 or 1979. Also I don't know if it had a cover - my copy is in a plain 10" sleeve. There seems to be very little information about this release on the 'net.

LaurenceD SUBS 12th Sep 2022 | | Classical ItemChancel Choir Of The Congregational Church Of San Mateo - Missa Brevis | The included program insert is for a performance on May 20, 1962. It is not stated whether this recording is from that performance, but it seems likely, so I have dated the LP based on that assumption.
Here is the entire program as listed in the insert:
- Prelude: Chorale in E Major (Cesar Franck)
- Invocation by Dr. Jerry W. Trexler
- Missa Brevis (Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina)
- Mass in G (Franz Schubert)
- Offertory: Chorale-Prelude: With Joy I Await the Lovely Summertime (Brahms)
- American Jazz Mass (Frank P. Tirro)

LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Sep 2022 | | Classical ItemRoyal Philharmonic Orchestra, Sir Thomas Beecham - The Abduction From The Seraglio By Mozart | The mono version on Angel was released in 1957.
Pretty good recording and clean pressing. Very enjoyable performance of this seldom-recorded opera. One bonus is the inclusion of all the spoken dialogue, which was often omitted in recordings from this era.

LaurenceD SUBS 31st Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Top 10 Hits Original Artists | All tracks are 'rechanneled' stereo
|
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Aug 2022 | | CD AlbumThe Residents - The King And Eye | I have listed the CD title in the same way that most of the trade mags and discographies show it.
I was tempted to use the Unicode character U+1F441 for 'eye', but the website won't display it, perhaps because it resides in plane 1.

LaurenceD SUBS 31st Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBlues Magoos - Psychedelic Lollipop | I have a copy with the same cover and labels as shown here, but it's actually a stereo pressing with runouts: [ 2/61096 A 1 / 2/61096 B 1 ]. Apparently a number of these are known to exist, see here. So if you have a mono copy, you might want to check it.
BTW mine is stamped "promotional copy / not for sale" and was given to station WSCR.

LaurenceD SUBS 15th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl Album[no artist listed] - 21 By Ad-Staff, Inc. | Ad-Staff was formed in 1957.
No composer credits per track are given, but after looking up some copyright info I can confirm that most of them have lyrics by Don Quinn and Martin Sperzel and music by Henry Russell.
Also based on those copyright dates, the tracks are presented in roughly chronological order, starting in 1957 (beer) and ending in 1959 (Pacific Airlines, Dodge Trucks).
They are very catchy advertisements; these guys knew what they were doing.
Martin Sperzel went on to write other notable jingles, see here

LaurenceD SUBS 12th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumPete Seeger - The Folksinger's Guitar Guide | I added an alternate back cover; same cat#, dated 1961.
The earlier issues, ca. 1956, had differing prefixes & numbers, e.g. FQ 8354, FP 354, CRB 1 (box). I suppose that they should be separate entries, but I'm not sure.

LaurenceD SUBS 9th Aug 2022 | | Classical ItemJohn Lill - Rakhmaninov: Etudes-Tableaux Op. 33 & Op. 39 | Regarding the numbering of the etudes in Op.33: Rachmaninoff composed nine pieces for the set, and six were published during his lifetime. Nos. 3 & 5 were published 5 years after his death, and No. 4 in A minor was transferred to Op.39 No.6

LaurenceD SUBS 6th Aug 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBilly Boyd - Twangy Guitars | Changed artist from "Bill Boyd" to "Billy Boyd", in order to separate this one from the 'Cowboy Ramblers' guy. As it turns out, the guitarist featured here is Jerry Cole.

LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Aug 2022 | | Classical ItemFrederick Moyer - Edward MacDowell, Clara Schumann | This was an interesting experiment in recording two piano concertos without the participation of a live orchestra. For the MacDowell recording, the orchestra is provided by a Music Minus One recording (used with permission). For the Clara Schumann recording, the orchestral backing is created from sampled sounds (except for the second movement, in which the accompaniment is provided by a solo cello, performed live).
Frederick Moyer includes some interesting comments about the process of using the sampling for the Schumann work, including what he considers the pros and cons of recording pieces using this method.
I think that the results, at least for the Schumann, are quite impressive. The technology in 2007 had improved considerably since the time when I had dabbled in scoring some chamber works using MIDI tools back in the 1990s.
