LaurenceD SUBS 26th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMTommy Dorsey Family (Mountain Branch) - Friendship / Chattanooga Choo Choo | According to the Aug 7 Billboard ad, the a-side features Jo Stafford and The Pied Pipers (not credited on label).
There is a story concerning the Hollywood Hillbillies track. It seems that Victor recorded their version of "Tim-Tayshun" (along with Chattanooga Choo Choo) to compete with the popular Red Ingle recording on Capitol 412. Catalog number 20-2336 was assigned and promo copies were sent to DJs on June 12, 1947. Within one day, Capitol contacted Victor with a strong warning, and the release was pulled. So apparently, promotional copies of that release did exist, although I have yet to see one. I'm guessing that the b-side on this release is the same recording as that on 20-2336. Incidentally on the runout of this b-side, it looks like two of the digits were scratched out, e.g. "20-23▓▓B" and overwritten with "55".

LaurenceD SUBS 17th Feb 2020 | | 12" SingleRoy Orbison - She's A Mystery To Me | Looking at this again, I wonder if it should be Virgin Europe...
|
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Jan 2020 | | CD SingleErnie Ashworth - Talking Back And Foolin You | The track order shown on disc is correct; the insert is wrong. So I took the track titles from the disc, and the composer credits from the insert.
These tracks seem to be excerpted from a (similar-looking) full-length CD album called '35th "Commemorative" Album' on C.J.A. Records

LaurenceD SUBS 16th Jan 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumLoyd Hadachek - Certified Purchase Plan | The disc contains instructions for sales personnel as to use of the "certified purchase plan" to aid in securing the sale of a vehicle.
I was surprised to see the Monarch delta numbers on this item.

LaurenceD SUBS 7th Jan 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Saltairs - Good Night, Mister Moon / I May Learn To Forget Some Day | From San Francisco Cable Car Chorus - archive:
San Francisco, as Northern California's "Mother of Barbershopping," gave birth to another important addition to the barbershopping family in 1954. On May 15 of that year Marin Chapter was awarded its charter by the San Francisco Chapter, at Marin's first parade of quartets. Does anyone remember that the Marin chorus was first called the "Saltairs?"

LaurenceD SUBS 7th Jan 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumStan Ross And His Friends From The Neighborhood - My Son The Copy Cat | Added more scans, and composer credits. The track order listing of B1 & B2 differs between the cover and the label; listening reveals that the label is correct, so I have adjusted the track order for this entry.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Jan 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Righteous Brothers - Souled Out | Hi VinylFan, I think that I have it sorted out now. The original stereo entry had no images; sometime thereafter various folks submitted images from their mono LPs. So I have:
- created a new mono entry (V-5031) here and moved the mono scans over to that one
- kept your scans here and added my cover scans as well
I cannot reassign ownership settings, so each member will have to account for their own status as far as that goes (attn: mrvica and soultwinz).

LaurenceD SUBS 30th Dec 2019 | | CD AlbumFrank Zappa - Mystery Disc | Added scans, including some from the insert booklet that (are not from discogs and) come a bit closer to the actual shade of orange - although my scanner cannot quite reproduce the day-glo intensity of the original.

LaurenceD SUBS 20th Dec 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumNeil Young / Neil And The Shocking Pinks - Everybody's Rockin' | I just looked at the personnel list on the inner sleeve again and noticed that Larry Byrom (yes, the Steppenwolf guy) is credited... as the piano player (?!).
I'll have to go back and watch Solo Trans again and see what he's doing...
|
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Dec 2019 | | 78 RPMNickelodeon - Ghost Town Melodies | Pretty tough to date this, as the ghost town attraction was around from the 1940s and for decades thereafter, and things didn't change much over time. I went there as a toddler around the late 1950s and have a vague recollection of those 'nickelodeon' machines. They had a number of these band piano contraptions, which were similar to player pianos, but included additional instruments to create the effect of a one-man band.
Sad to say, but by now most if not all of them have fallen into disrepair and have been auctioned off.

LaurenceD SUBS 10th Dec 2019 | | 78 RPMBenny Goodman Sextet - Flying Home / Rose Room (In Sunny Roseland) | Note: "Homeward Bound" on V Disc 731 is an alternate take of "Flying Home" from the same session, also featuring a solo by Charlie Christian.

LaurenceD SUBS 20th Nov 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumDave "Baby" Cortez - The Whistling Organ | After listening to this, I'm pretty sure that those b-side tracks do not feature Dave "Baby" Cortez. The same tracks can be found (uncredited) on various budget LP releases.

LaurenceD SUBS 20th Nov 2019 | | Cassette AlbumMisha Knight - I Am A Gorby Man | El Paso Times May 29, 1990: Another Washington entrepreneur, Misha Knight, will be selling summit T-shirts and a cassette on which he is the star. Knight wrote all the songs on the cassette and that he and the band recorded them after drinking three bottles of vodka.
Associated Press / AP-NR-05-30-90 1614EST / AM-Summit-LafayettePark / Misha Knight, who emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1978 because he ``did not see a future there,'' said he came to this summit to show support for the growing friendship between the United States and his homeland.
He also was selling Gorbachev T-shirts _ $15 each _ and an $8 cassette tape featuring himself singing ``I Am a Gorby Man,'' and ``Give Peace a Hand,'' among other tunes.
El Paso Times June 1, 1990: No U.S. entrepreneur has a greater interest in the political longevity of Gorbachev than Misha Knight, the Washington manufacturer and hawker of Gorby T-shirts. Knight, who immigrated to the United States from the Soviet Union a dozen years ago and changed his name from Misha Nete, is making the rounds from Lafayette Park to the National Press Club to the summit press center at George Washington University with a suitcase of his shirts.

LaurenceD SUBS 17th Nov 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Famous Standards Of Maceo Pinkard | According to the Billboard ad, this album was also available in 45 rpm and EP formats. I see some of the 45 single releases out there; I have yet to see any EP from this label.
The mono LP appears to have been issued with number 125.

LaurenceD SUBS 13th Nov 2019 | | 78 RPMBob Crosby - On The Atchison, Topeka And Santa Fe / On The Night Train To Memphis | Second of two releases of "On The Atchison" on RM 114. The first featured an additional Bob Crosby track (with Peggy Lee) on the B-side, "It's Anybody's Spring".
Some discussion about why Peggy Lee is on these releases here

LaurenceD SUBS 28th Oct 2019 | | 78 RPMTed Vesely, Lee Countryman, Morty Corb, "Smokey" Stover, Ralph Harden, Bill Wood - Peter And The Wolf / Tin Roof | No info to be found for this release, or the label for that matter. I did run across something in Billboard March 11, 1950, an article on p.47 "Dixieland Pace in Hwd. Upbeat" about the popularity of trad jazz bands in Los Angeles clubs: "... Ted Vesely is at Glendale's Tom-Tom".
[update - The Tom Tom club had two locations: 6266 Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, and 806 E. Colorado Blvd. in Glendale. International Musician July 1950 lists a new Tom Tom record label having the same address as the Glendale club]
There is one more Tom Tom release (1002) featuring the same lineup.
