LaurenceD SUBS 5th Apr 2019 | | CD AlbumLeon Russell - Hank Wilson Vol. II | My copy appears to be autographed by Leon and 'Hank'.
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMRed Raven Orchestra - Old MacDonald Had A Farm / Little White Duck | I had a copy of this release along with the magic mirror when I was a toddler. It's long gone now, but I recently came across two of these in a thrift store. Searched the entire store for that mirror, but it was nowhere to be found :-(
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMRed Raven Orchestra - Tootles The Tug / The Little Red Engine | Set the date to 1956, and cat #s to M1 / M2. The series continued at least through M-32. Also included full disc scans as the design is quite interesting.
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Mar 2019 | | 78 RPMTommy Reynolds - Two Hearts That Pass In The Night / Everything Happens To Me | This short-lived label should not be confused with the 1930s Hit Of The Week label. This record is composed of a not-so-flexible plastic material, somewhat similar to styrene but less brittle.
Lacking definite release date information, I tentatively set this to 1941, as both of these songs were released by various notable bands in that year.
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - She Loves Me | "Thank You Madam", listed on the cover (side one), was omitted on the LP, possibly due to time constraints; it was restored on the CD release, along with the final curtain call.
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Original Soundtrack From Uncle Tom's Cabin | There are no bands separating the tracks.
The track featuring Juliette Gréco (So Much The Worse For Me) is sung in French, and on some corresponding non-U.S. releases is titled "Tant pis, tant pis pour moi".
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Mar 2019 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Sound Effects / Sound Effects | Thanks for all that information xiphophilos. In case there is any doubt, this is indeed a standard shellac 78.
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Mar 2019 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Sound Effects / Sound Effects | I cannot find any information about this record.
Each side is a different series of train sounds along with a conductor calling out things such as "All aboard!" and "Lionel Express running on time!". There is also a narrator describing various features of Lionel trains. I can only speculate, but this doesn't sound like something that would be available for purchase; maybe these recordings would be played in the Lionel stores for patrons to hear.
LaurenceD SUBS 19th Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Gene Price Country Express | I see one error on the cover: track D6 should have been listed as "I'm NOT Through Loving You Yet" :-)
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Mar 2019 | | 78 RPMHenry Nathan And His Cathay Hotel Orch. - One Night Of Love / Remember My Forgotten Man | I don't have enough information to narrow down the date for this, but it must be from about the mid-1930s based on the film songs chosen. Henry Nathan (born Henry Nathanowitz) led a band in residence at the Cathay Hotel in Shanghai that was quite popular from around 1933 to 1937. After Japan occupied Shanghai, Nathan spent some time in a prison camp, and during that time led a band comprised of camp members.
LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumLionel Newman Conducting The 20th Century-Fox Orchestra And Chorus - Music From The Sound Track: Boy On A Dolphin | Although the track list appears to indicate that the entire score was composed by Friedhofer, Webster and Morakis, I believe that this only applies to tracks A1 and B7, the remainder being the work of Friedhofer alone. Paul Francis Webster wrote the lyrics for the title song which was based on the melody from "Ti Ein' Afto" (aka "Tin Afto") by Takis Morakis.
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumDora Hall - Tramping | Presumably the songs listed as "Composer-Publisher Pending" were each composed by Jill Jackson, Sy Miller, Ben Raleigh and/or H. B. Barnum.
Incidentally "Pretty Boy" seems to be the same song as on this James Bell single, although that release credits composers Bell, Stoval, McBride, Gray.

LaurenceD SUBS 26th Feb 2019 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington And His Kentucky Club Orchestra - East St. Louis Toodle-O / Birmingham Breakdown | I'm not really sure whether this was released in late '26 or early '27.
There were quite a few recordings of the A-side tune released in the 1920s, including these:

LaurenceD SUBS 18th Feb 2019 | | Classical ItemThe Royal Danish Orchestra, Leonard Bernstein - Nielsen: Symphony No. 3 | Forgot to mention that my copy is lacking the insert.
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Feb 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumGogi Grant - The Wayward Wind | The labels are also marked "HNLP-19". I believe that this LP was issued in mono format only.
Deltas: Δ1056 / Δ1057
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Feb 2019 | | Classical ItemMilanov, Di Stefano, Warren, Elias, Tozzi - Verdi: The Force Of Destiny (La Forza Del Destino) | The back side of the box has a flap with a metal clasp, which makes it difficult to lay flat upon the scanner. So, that image is a bit fuzzy.
LaurenceD SUBS 8th Feb 2019 | | 78 RPMRaushan Ara Begum - Aesi Sanvari Saloni Gori / Ja Main To Se Nahin Boloon | The artist is usually referred to as Roshan Ara Begum.
The titles shown in Shahmukhi script are a problem for me, but I'll keep researching...
LaurenceD SUBS 8th Feb 2019 | | 78 RPMKhansahib Bare Ghulamali Khan - Yad Piya Ki Aae / Naina More Taras Rahe | The artist is better known/transliterated as Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. And the a-side is usually referred to as "Yaad Piya Ki Aaye".
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Jan 2019 | | 78 RPMSir Lancelot - Calypso | The first 4 sides were previously issued on Keynote Album K-126. Sides 3 & 4 are also from Keynote single K-548, and sides 5 & 6 are from Keynote single K-559.
I tentatively based the release date on the listing at bsnpubs. All I know is that Mercury had apparently acquired the entire Keynote catalog by April or May 1948, according to a Billboard article from Feb 28, 1948, p.22.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Jan 2019 | | 78 RPMJimmy Grissom - S'Help Me I Love You / House Of Fire | For this label, I don't know whether the 'A' or 'AA' side was the intended top side.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Jan 2019 | | Classical ItemArnold Schoenberg - Schoenberg Conducts Schoenberg: Pierrot Lunaire | Recorded September 24-26 1940.
Here is an interesting article about the test pressings from which these album tracks were selected, and the difficulty for performers (Stiedry-Wagner in this case) of determining the correct pitch and timing when interpreting the Sprechstimme of a composition such as this one: The Test Pressings of Schoenberg Conducting Pierrot lunaire: Sprechstimme Reconsidered
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Dec 2018 | | Classical ItemVarious Artists - Four Tenors...Same Aria | Looks like kind of a follow-up or companion release to the LP: Ten Tenors: Ten Arias / RCA Victor LM-1202 (Mar, 1952). These 4 tenors are featured on the LP, but singing different arias.
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Dec 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - S. F. Record Tid-Bits | The album originally came with an informative inner sleeve, and a catalog which was inserted into the slot in the front of the cover (both missing from my copy).
Also, the track listings on the labels do not show the song titles, but instead show the album titles from which the sample tracks were selected. I have gone through the individual LP listings while listening to this record in an attempt to determine the actual titles of the selections. Here is what I've been able to pin down:
A1 / Albert White & The Gaslight Orchestra / Robert E. Lee
A2 / Ree Brunell / When I Fall In Love
A3 / Max Morath / How You Gonna Keep 'Em Down On The Farm
A4 / Salvini Big Band / (similar to "Topsy", might be Topsy Returns)
A5 / Bee Goman / Good Old Days
A6 / Albert White & The Gaslight Orch. / Dinah
A7 / Guckenheimer Band / Vilia
B1 / Albert White & The Gaslight Orchestra / (?)
B2 / Mel Lewis & Septet / (?)
B3 / Original Cylinders / (Collins and Harlan) / Arra Wanna
B4 / Jerry Coker Quartet / Waters Edge
B5 / Sutro's Nickelodeons / (?)
B6 / Player Piano / Old Piano Roll Blues

LaurenceD SUBS 29th Dec 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumRed, Wilder, Blue - Red, Wilder, Blue | Southern California band.
Lucky Floyd previously played in The Sparkles.
Mike Ballew recorded an LP for Liberty around 1980-81, which was shelved and later released by Bear Family.
Mack Tubb released a single on the Texas Hub label in the 1960s (as Mack Tubb and the Shades).
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Dec 2018 | | 78 RPMAllan Jones - The Donkey Serenade / Giannina Mia | Yes; given the same cat#, we consider it to be a later pressing of that release.
LaurenceD SUBS 23rd Dec 2018 | | Classical ItemJessye Norman, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Kurt Masur - R. Strauss: Vier Letzte Lieder; 6 Orchesterlieder | Lyrics insert is missing from my copy.
LaurenceD SUBS 20th Dec 2018 | | Classical ItemLotte Lehmann - Lotte Lehmann Sings | All arias are sung in German (including The Marriage Of Figaro and Madame Butterfly)
LaurenceD SUBS 4th Dec 2018 | | Classical ItemBallet Theatre Orchestra, Joseph Levine - Bernstein: Fancy Free | On my copy shown here, It looks like the original catalog number L-8197 has been updated (on the back cover only) as H-8197 with the aid of a rubber stamp. I will add the new number in the alt field, although I don't know what was going on with Capitol's prefix assignments during that time.
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Dec 2018 | | Classical ItemLondon Symphony Orchestra, Colin Davis - Stravinsky: Orpheus | There is a mistake on the labels (with my copy at least): side 1 lists the symphony and side 2 lists Orpheus. The listing on the cover correctly indicates what the two sides actually play.
LaurenceD SUBS 29th Nov 2018 | | 78 RPMGeorgia Gibbs - The Trolley Song / Wish You Were Waiting For Me | I don't know if Maestro Music managed to issue any additional singles; I have not found evidence of any. According to Billboard they had several Freddie Martin recordings in the can, but had to scrap the releases due to a dispute with Victor.
