LaurenceD SUBS 6th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMKid Ory's Creole Jazz Band - Careless Love / Do What Ory Say | Number 5 out of 8 releases on Nesuhi Ertegun's Crescent label.
Later reissued on Jazz Man 25, and Good Time Jazz 81
See this wiki page for more info about Crescent.

LaurenceD SUBS 6th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMDelta Rhythm Boys - Dry Bones / September Song | Sorry, my copy is missing the 4th disc.
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMMiff Mole - Nick's presents his Dixieland Jazz Band featuring "Miff" Mole | Recorded March 2, 1945
From what I can gather, it looks like these albums were sold at Nick Rongetti's restaurant, where Miff's band performed regularly in 1945.
This album included an 8-page booklet which unfortunately is missing from my copy.
These tracks have been reissued on the Storyville label, but under Muggsy Spanier's name.

LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Clovers - I Played The Fool / Hey, Miss Fannie | Posted some more readable labels, with respect to coveboy.
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Nov 2014 | | Classical ItemAcademy And Chorus Of St. Martin-In-The-Fields, Neville Marriner - Mozart: Mass In C Minor "Grosse Messe" | Musicologist and author Howard Chandler Robbins Landon, who reconstructed parts of the Credo and Sanctus used in this recording, was largely responsible for chronicling the complete works of Joseph Haydn and bringing them to the public's attention.
LaurenceD SUBS 24th Nov 2014 | | 8-TrackThe Beatles - Meet The Beatles! | According to this site, this tape was first released in a white shell in 1967, then in a black shell in 1970, with the same cat no.
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Nov 2014 | | Classical ItemConcertgebouw-Orchester, Amsterdam - Mahler: Symphonie Nr. 1 "Der Titan" | Philips' mid-priced Sequenza series made its debut in 1981, and reviews for this release also start appearing that same year, so I have reset the date accordingly.
[edit] I believe that this recording's first release was on Philips 6500 342 in late 1972.
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Oct 2014 | | 78 RPMLillie Mae And The House Rockers - Lovin' Man Blues / Lonesome | Lillie Mae also released titles as:
- Ramona Hicks (Bluebird, c. 1939)
- Lillie Mae Kirkman (Vocalion, c. 1939)
This was her last appearance on record.
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Oct 2014 | | 78 RPMSheriff John - Nosey Rosey / Small Fry Mambo | Sorry about the condition of this one. I guess that's what can happen when little kids play with 78s.
Most if not all of these Sheriff John singles came with picture sleeves; I have not managed to acquire a sleeve so far.
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Oct 2014 | | 78 RPMEthel Smith And The Bando Carioca - Tico-Tico / Lero Lero / Bem Te Vi Atrevido | Although they're credited on the B-side label, I don't seem to hear The Bando Carioca on that track; and I see that the linked UK issue does not credit them for that side.
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Oct 2014 | | Cassette AlbumThe Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request | This tape may have been available in some form in 1967, but as my copy lists Beggars Banquet on the inlay, it must have been manufactured at least a year or two after that.
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Oct 2014 | | Cassette AlbumThe Garfish - Demo | No info to be found on this group, but I see that three of the band members were guitar students of Karl Grossman, who is still active at the Music Focus studio in Hermosa Beach.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Oct 2014 | | Classical ItemVladimir Ashkenazy, London Symphony Orchestra, André Previn - Prokofiev: Piano Concertos No. 3 And No. 4 | These recordings were originally issued as part of a 3-disc box set of 5 concertos, London CSA 2314 (1975). The discs in that set used the cat numbers CS 6962, 6963 and 6964. This release used the same third disc from that set with a new cover, hence the sides 3 & 4 of 6 shown on these labels.
LaurenceD SUBS 4th Oct 2014 | | Classical ItemMayumi Fujikawa, Elena Livshitz, Rudolf Barshai, Moscow Chamber Orchestra - Laureates Of The 4th International Tchaikovsky Competition | The Fourth International Tchaikovsky Competition was held in 1970.
(Note that on the track listings on the cover and labels, the Bach concerto is erroneously described as in the key of D major; the liner notes have the correct key of E major)
LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Oct 2014 | | Classical ItemLev Oborin, David Oistrakh, Sviatoslav Knushevitsky - Rachmaninoff: Trio No.2 Opus 9, "Elegiaque" | The notes do not specify the original recording date, but I believe that this performance was from around 1958. Knushevitsky passed away in 1963.
LaurenceD SUBS 20th Aug 2014 | | Classical ItemAlfred Brendel, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bernard Haitink - Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 In G, Op. 58 | Not 100% sure about the release date of this one, but I know that the full set of concertos (Philips 6767 002, 5 LPs) was first released in 1977, and then the individual concerto releases appeared some time thereafter.
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Jul 2014 | | Classical ItemAndrás Schiff - Beethoven Works On Beethoven's Piano | It's worth mentioning that Beethoven would have been stone deaf by the time he took possession of the piano used here, though he still managed to compose some major works with it. I guess that the action of the keys met with his approval.
LaurenceD SUBS 23rd Jul 2014 | | Classical ItemAlfred Brendel - Piano Sonatas ''Les Adieux'' ''Hammerklavier'' | I believe that this LP was released in the early 1980s, as most reviews seem to date from early 1982. Note the publishing date for Op.81a on side 1.
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Apr 2014 | | Classical ItemJanet Baker, English Chamber Orchestra, Raymond Leppard - Janet Baker Sings Handel | The CD version of this release gives each movement from Lucrezia its own track number, so I used that arrangement for this cassette, to make it more readable.
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Sep 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Young Man From Boston | The song titles are not given, and I was unable to track them down, so here is a summary of the musical content with my guesses at the performers & titles:
- opening: The Mormon Tabernacle Choir: The Kennedy Years
- The Kingston Trio: A Son Of The Here And Now
- Gordon MacRae with The Mormon Tabernacle Choir: There Was A Man
- closing: The Mormon Tabernacle Choir: The Kennedy Years
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Sep 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - I Can Get It For You Wholesale | I listed the participating cast members for each track, mainly so a search for Streisand will return this item. The listings of participants per track varies a bit between the sleeve and the labels, so I went with the labels, as they were supposedly more up-to-date when this LP was assembled.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Jun 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Military Marches Of Sweden | A couple of composer name discrepancies between the cover and labels -
A5: E. Franks or E. Franke
A6: C. Treiks or C. Teiks
I'm not sure which ones are correct, as I am quite unfamiliar with these composers.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Jun 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumLes Baxter - Space Escapade | Album covers don't get much better than this!
LaurenceD SUBS 13th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumRichie Havens - Electric Havens | These are pre-Verve demo recordings of Richie accompanying himself on guitar, subsequently overdubbed with various instruments by Alan Douglas. The original demos seem to be mono recordings, and the overdubs are in stereo. Rather frustrating to listen to, as Richie's renditions are quite good, at least from what I can make out underneath all that racket. To make matters worse, the musicians on the overdubs occasionally get noticeably out of sync with the original tape.
LaurenceD SUBS 13th May 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Harptones [Gospel] - The Sounds Of The Harptones | I differentiated these guys from the other Harptones, as this is a gospel group from Cincinnati.
The Rite label used this cover design for releases by various artists, as can be seen here.
I would estimate that this LP was released c.1972-73.
LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Apr 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumBurl Ives - The Wayfaring Stranger | Not to be confused with the 1950 Columbia LP with the same title (CL 6109)
Previous 78 rpm album releases (6 sides, absent "The Fox" and "Brennan On The Moor"):
- 1944: Asch 345
- 1946: Stinson 345
(Note that "Henry Martin" is spelled "Henry Marlyn" on the label)
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Feb 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Four Roses Society - Sing With The Four Roses Society | Someone had to add this... ;-)
The RCA matrix numbers would seem to indicate a 1959 release, if the same dating guide can be used for LPs as well as 45s.
This record sold for one dollar, and the first mention of it that I could find in Billboard was March 21, 1960, which was sometime after the fact. As far as I can determine, it was pressed only in mono format.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Feb 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumMichael Fennelly - Lane Changer | Fennelly has stated in interviews that these (uncredited) musicians also contributed:
- Casey Foutz: keyboards, including Moog on Dark Night
- Jeff Beck: lead guitar on Watch Yerself
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Jan 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumBob And Ray - The Two And Only | I never get tired of this one, Slow Talker:
[YouTube Video]
LaurenceD SUBS 11th Jan 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumFlorence Foster Jenkins - A Florence! Foster!! Jenkins!!! Recital!!!! | From the (somewhat disdainful) Billboard review: "Listening to her pathetic bleating of standard colorature arias is something like eavesdropping on a padded cell inmate."
Sounds like my kind of music!
