MicSmith 22nd Dec 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumFleetwood Mac - Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac | The release date shown (24 February 1968) was a Saturday, so I wonder if this was released on 23 February - Friday's being standard at the time in the UK?
|
MicSmith 24th Aug 2021 | | CD SinglePeter Gabriel - Biko | I bought the CD edition of this single in the run up to Christmas in December 1987, so the January release date claimed isn't correct.
I believe this was the third format of four to be issued after the 12" (9 November 1987) and cassette (unconfirmed by most likely 23 November or 30 November 1987).
The best indication for a release date for the CD that I have is 7 December 1987 or 14 December 1987 although confirmatory evidence is still being sought for this and the 7".

MicSmith 23rd Mar 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumPeter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel | This reissue was released in March 1985. I’m trying to tie this down to a specific week.
|
MicSmith 23rd Mar 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumGenesis - Foxtrot | Regarding the year of release I have a cutting showing this album and Peter Gabriel first solo album appearing in the CHC series of budget releases. The cutting is dated March 1985 and most probably came from Sounds (or Melody Maker or NME). I’m trying to tie this down more accurately.

MicSmith 29th Dec 2020 | | Vinyl Album[no artist listed] - Twelve Top Hits | Given the inclusion of The Beatles song Let It Be I suggest this was released late in March 1970 not February 1970 as the Beatles song wasn't released until March 1970.

MicSmith 22nd Nov 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumElton John - Empty Sky | Well it exists as a mono mix and a very small number of serious collectors have a copy. There are photos of it here on discogs:
https://www.discogs.com/Elton-John-Empty-Sky/release/4095537
I saw a mono sleeve in a record shop in Cardiff when I was going the University visits in 1981 trying to decide where to study. It was £5. I would imagine this was a stereo copy in a mono sleeve but I never thought seriously of buying it mainly because interest in mono records wasn't really there for me (or generally speaking) at that time.
Someone posted on Hoffman the other day that he recently bought a mono copy in among a bunch of albums and was going to report back on his copy but I haven't seen his follow up post yet.
With the 50th anniversay of this album having long passed without sign of a reissue I wonder if it'll ever be made more widely available now to be honest.

MicSmith 19th Oct 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumElton John - Tumbleweed Connection | While researching Genesis release dates this year I came across a reference to the release of Tumbleweed Connection having to be rescheduled due to issues with the elaborate sleeve/booklet. I believe it was intended to be released on 13 November (possibly after being scheduled for the date given on here and on Wikipedia) but was delayed to an as yet unconfirmed date. The album entered the UK charts on 16 Jan 1971 which suggests a release sometime in December in fact. I also came across a copy of a music paper that was dated 26 December 1970 (not sure which paper but not Sounds - possibly Disc and Music Echo) and this included an advert for this album saying it was 'available now' and I wonder therefore if this also suggests a December release. (I realise adverts can appear weeks after release for a number of reasons). I've got a few music papers from December 1970 so will see if I can find anything else pointing to this delay. But the October 30 date is certainly wrong.

MicSmith 25th May 2020 | | MagazineZigZag | This issue is advertised within the pages of Sounds cover date 21 July 1973 so its almost certainly July 1973 for the ZigZag too.
|
MicSmith 25th May 2020 | | MagazineZigZag | I think the flexi was only free with Issue 35 myself and the reference to it appearing with Issue 41 is an error. Yes it was the fifth anniversary issue but the reference to Free on the front cover is surely a reference to the band.
Does any one know what day of the week (and which week in the month) ZigZag tended to reach news stands? The first issue seems to have been launched on a Wednesday and this issue carries an advert for the then current Genesis tour but only lists dates from 11 October rather than the opening night of the tour (5 October) so its my assumption this was on sale from Wednesday 10 October. Does anyone know more?

MicSmith 10th May 2020 | | Cassette AlbumGenesis - From Genesis To Revelation | I'm currently doing research into the appearance of this tape. It's certainly after September 1973 with December 1973 as a possibility or may even be early in 1974. I have some documents coming my way which I hope will shed some light on this.
|
MicSmith 10th May 2020 | | Cassette AlbumGenesis - Trespass | Yes this particular edition with the Phonogram logo and revised catalogue number is a reissue. I'm no expert on the precise dates but have always believed the new distribution deal came into effect from September 1975. As for when cassettes caught up in this change I'll assume you are correct in your assertion that this was 1976. Certainly copies of some Charisma product marketed by Phonogram were B&C stock copies that had stickers placed over the credit bearing Phonogram details. The "Genesisteria" adverts that appeared in music papers in 1976 may well have been the moment when Phonogram actively repromoted the Genesis back catalogue.

MicSmith 12th Apr 2020 | | 12" SingleGary Moore And Friends - Nuclear Attack | Martin C. Strong The Great Rock Discography states October 1981 for the release date. Having checked against the run of Jet 7" and 12" singles listed on 45cat and 45 Worlds that seems to fit with the sequencing of those that have better release date information. When I saw the date given in TGRD I wasn't sure as I thought it had appeared earlier in 1981 but with the supporting information from this site I now accept that October 1981 is probably correct.

MicSmith 12th Apr 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumGary Moore - Back On The Streets | Although this album is given a 1978 release date I believe it was released in January 1979, with the Back in the Streets single (a faded version of the album track) issued in December 1978.
The single was originally to appear in October 1978 as per its listing on the 45cat page but I believe it was delayed until the December release.(See Martin C. Strong The Great Rock Discography).
I was a big GM fan at this point and was eagerly awaiting the appearance of this record after the dissolution of Colosseum II and my strong recollection of knowing about the release of the album was seeing Gary and his Thin Lizzy friends appear on OGWT early in 1979. My brother bought the album on the back of this appearance and I taped it from his vinyl shortly after but before Parisienne Walkways was issued as a single. Also full page adverts for the album didn't start to appear in the UK music papers until January 1979 another indication that it appeared that month.

MicSmith 29th Jul 2019 | | 12" SinglePeter Gabriel - Biko | The date stated for the release date is actually its chart entry date. It should be 9 November 1987 for the 12" edition only.
The single later appeared on CD single (with an extra track), 7" and cassette single.
|
MicSmith 28th Jul 2019 | | CD SinglePeter Gabriel - Sledgehammer | Definitely a 1988 release.
That Music Master entry is interesting - John Has A Headache? Never been released officially (and only unofficially in audience quality live versions)
I've often wondered why certain discographies include this mistake - it seems it might be from Music Master.
|
MicSmith 15th Jul 2019 | | CD SinglePeter Gabriel - Big Time (Extended Version) | I recall that when this single appeared on CD it exceeded the maximum length permitted for singles so it contravened the rules around what counted as a single for the singles chart purposes. The single was difficult to get hold of for a while suggesting that Charisma has pulled it from shops. It had been suggested that an edited version of the single would be pressed to deal with this problem but I think all Charisma/Virgin did in the end was to reissue the same single with the bar code masked in part by the sticker. I assumed this was so it didn't count towards the singles sales, although by the time these appeared the single had long since disappeared from view anyway.

MicSmith 19th Jan 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumGenesis - Foxtrot | This reissue with new catalogue number appeared in 1985 not 1986.
|
MicSmith 19th Jan 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumGenesis - Trespass | There are Phonogram copies of this from 1975/76 that still the retain the Scroll Logo on the right panel of the inner sleeve. My copy of this edition was purchased new in January 1977 at a UK high street store and didn't come with the lyric sheet (although that might have been due to it becoming detached in the shop as opposed to it not being part of the package).
