The Beatles - Abbey Road
John leads, dressed all in white, right down to his shoes. Ringo's next, dressed like he's heading for a lunch engagement(leather shoes - murder on the feet on a hot day), George brings up the rear, dressed in denim and - are they suede shoes? And Paul, dressed ever-so-casually and going bare-foot, just as well there's no broken glass on the road!

R.C.: "The cover is message saying life is like a bowl of cherries". That seems to contradict what Forest Gump's Mum told him... that life was like a box of chocolates!(ha-ha)

And if you're curious as to why Roy Orbison's in this set... simple! M-G-M lured him to their record division with the promise of him making a movie.... he made one - "The Fastest Guitar Alive", from which came "There Won't Be Many Coming Home" and "Pistolero" as two notable songs. The movie itself?... Sank without a trace! I don't think anyone has ever seen it on TV and those who saw it in its cinema release would have only the vaguest memory of it, if at all.

Clearly it would be safe to say this label DID NOT seek copyright clearance from EMI to issue this album in Thailand.

R.C.'s last comment: "Inteviewed on anthology he hated salmon and ended up taking can of baked beans" Imagine him having a bath afterwards....(ooh I'm a shocker!). But seriously, there was tension throughout on the Let It Be sessions, no doubt exacerbated by the presence of John Lennon's "new-found friend", whom I won't name for legal reasons but we all know who that person was, and there are many who hold that person responsible for the break-up of The Beatles. If you have the 1982 doco, The Compleat Beatles(which, I think is now on DVD officially, my DVD has been made from a VHS tape), you'll see that Paul wasn't completely blameless either. Basically they were all getting on each other's "wick". Paul admitted to a bit of pushiness in the doco "George Harrison - Living In The Material World" aired on SBS-TV here in Australia last Sunday(25-1-2015).

Various Artists - A Collection Of 16 Tamla Motown Hits
Did they ONLY issue this in mono? They could have issued it in stereo as so many of these tracks DO have stereo mixes available that had since turned up on other albums. The label, Tamla/Motown was launched partly to coincide with a tour of the UK by several of Motown's "premier" artists and groups in 1965.

Hi, TopPopper. Not all the Beatles got into the Eastern mysticism. Ringo might've been wondering what all the fuss was about... didn't he leave early 'cause he didn't like the food?
And your last thought: "Of course, it's all preposterous. Or is it?..." Weeeell! As I said, I bet Paul McCartney, if he thinks back on it at all, would possibly laugh himself silly these days.

The bottom edge of the label should've read: "Harvest is a trade mark of EMI(The Gramophone Co.) Gt. Britain and used by Capitol Records(Canada) Ltd. under licence from the trade mark owner"

The Beatles - Abbey Road
A doco about The Beatles in Australia was shown on New Years Day by ABC-TV(Australia) which mentioned that Paul McCartney celebrated his 22nd birthday while the "fab four" were in Sydney during their 1964 tour of Australia and New Zealand. This sits at odds with the claim about the rego plate number on the VW seen on the front cover of this album. If anyone remembers the publicity stunt(a joke that got carried too far) of Paul McCartney "dying" in 1966 or 1967. The Magical Mystery Tour had a photo of Paul with the Sword of Damaclese(guessing spelling) suspended above him, and the Abbey Road cover has him bare-foot. The VW's registration plate read "28 IF", meaning Paul would've been 28 if he had lived. Well actually, no. Doing the math, Paul was 27 in 1969 when Abbey Road was first issued, and 26 when the group started work on the album in 1968 after all-but abandoning the "Let It Be" project. I'd imagine Paul would be having a right old laugh about it all these years later.

Bobby Taylor - Taylor Made Soul
After reading that bio on him, I see Bobby Taylor only had the two albums - this solo effort and one with his group, The Vancouvers, nothing else, and the singles? Simply lifts from the albums. Pity. He's a really good R. & B. singer.

Phil, I stand(or sit) corrected!, The playing time for "Papa...." is 6 minutes, 58 seconds. It's the last of only 5 tracks on Side 6 of "Anthology" - The Temptations(10th Anniversary Album), issued on Motown as M-782A3 in 1973(being The Temptations, you'd expect this to be on the Gordy label, wouldn't you?). I just remembered - I visited a record fair at Speers Point(Lake MacQuarie area, south of Newcastle NSW, Australia) a few years ago, I recall seeing a German 45rpm of "Papa..." I think it was Pt.1 and Pt.2, spread across both sides of the disc with a total playing of(possibly) 11.45.

With two cracks rendering it unplayable, I don't think my copy would even fetch $1.41 Australian!(but I do have it on home-burned CD, so at least, if I want to, I can still listen to it).

Bobby Taylor - Taylor Made Soul
Quite rightly he should be bitter about being denied due credit for discovering The Jackson 5. Bobby Taylor's profile at Motown "wasn't big enough, so it seemed. He was regarded among Motown's "second string" or even "third string" of artists and groups who were signed to either of the company's labels. But that alone is NOT good enough reason to deny the recognition that was due to him for discovering what turned out to be "a major talent" and getting the group signed to Motown. Bobby, even if Motown didn't - and still doesn't - I give you that recognition. Well done!

As Maxwell Smart always said: "Missed it by thaaaaat much, Chief!" I'm just now able to get back on the net. My modem was giving me grief. No matter how many times in the past hour and a half I tried to reconnect, it just wouldn't happen - until now, that is. Rather surprised to read Taylor was turned down for the lead vocal with The Temptations(in the linked article) because "he had flat feet"..... really! It ain't the feet that do the singin'!

Bread - The Sound Of Bread- Their 16 Finest Songs
The Australian K-Tel issue had a picture of the group walking up a sloping grassy hill, and the compilation contained 20 tracks, as against the 16 on this US issue, though the title was the same.

The label and rear sleeve of TMS had the title with "Bless'd" rather than "Blessed". Taylor was/is from Canada, as is R. Dean Taylor but the two merely share the same surname. Taylor and his group hailed from Vancouver, British Columbia, the city giving the group its name. Bobby Taylor was actually the one who "discovered" The Jackson 5 but the credit was given to Diana Ross instead, as she had more prominence than Taylor.

TopPopper asked: "What sound does bread make?" Something crumby, I'd guess. That assistant was too lazy to find out who this group was, perhaps he was just "loafing" around. And I realise I'm not gonna earn a crust as a comic with these half-baked puns.... Okay, TP, I hear you. I'll stop now!(was that a sigh of relief I heard from TopPopper?).

Which nationality is the copy you have, R.C.? Likely "I Go To Pieces" was deleted from the Dutch issue because it wouldn't have meant anything in Holland(because the single may not have been issued there).

There was a three-disc anthology of The Temptations issued in 1973, not on the Gordy label, as you'd expect, but on Motown, and the sides were coupled in "changer order" - 1 to 6, 2 to 5, 3 to 4. The complete 11.45 version is on that set though not in true stereo but the synthetic stereo instead.

Sorry I forgot to white out(crop) the label images. This record unfortunately has two cracks, rendering it unplayable but I did get to commit it to CD before the damage occurred, so it's not entirely lost. Pick of the tracks for me is A1 - Out In The Country and A4 - My Girl Has Gone. Interesting version of Eleanor Rigby deserves honourable mention.

Hi, Phil. "Papa" vocals edited out, ay? Just to 'create' an instrumental out of a vocal track. Suppose they did that with Rare Earth's version of "Get Ready" too! Those dirty cheats!(ha-ha)

A3 and A4, both on one single(A & B sides) Will post the Indian issue I have on 45Cat. sometime soon. And to answer George Slv, I don't think they're digital masters, considering the era in which the originals were recorded(from 1965[pre-"Boots"] to 1970) though they may have been copied from those master tapes onto early digital storage media in 1986(a possibility, I guess).

Various Artists - 24 Solid Hits
There was a TV documentary some years back about Majestic Products/K-Tel, it dealt with the records side of the business. Apparently when they started issuing records, they(Majestic) were not seeking the proper copyright clearances(licences) from the companies whose product they used(naughty, naughty!). It is likely for this reason that CBS through their Columbia Special Products division, stepped in to ensure proper clearances were obtained before any of these types of albums were issued in the future. And that's the reason why all those Majestic LPs had the CBS logo on the left side and CBS Special Products around the top(Australia/NZ, UK and elsewhere) and Columbia Special Products(USA/Canada).
