PhilMH SUBS ● 16th Nov 2022		CD Album David Bowie - Very Best	I would call this a bootleg, Greg - label code 0392 belonged to Warner Bros. Records, and the price code POL belonged to PolyGram, neither of whom have ever been related to BMG, Arista, RCA, or any permutation thereof!

PhilMH SUBS ● 6th Nov 2022		CD Album Noel Flynn - Irish Through And Through	Hi Greg, I would say this is primarily Ireland, as the IMRO logo on the back of the fold-out indicates the Irish Music Rights Organisation (equivalent to PRS, ASCAP, BMI, APRA, etc)., though it appears the disc might actually have been made in the UK, Google and Facebook searches telling me that Main Street Duplication was based in Enniskillen in Northern Ireland (the website now redirects to what seems to be a completely unrelated Chinese site), and the Facebook page (which hasn't been updated since 2019) showing phone numbers for both UK and ROI, but they were the same phone number with different area codes, and it was also different to the mobile (?) number that was on the site showing the Enniskillen address. I didn't have any luck with company/business name or trademark registrations for Longmire Records in either country. Most of the places named in the song titles are ROI, except Antrim (most of the Belfast area) and Amarillo - and that latter song was actually written by Terry Stafford and was a US country hit for George Strait; ditto "Kiss An Angel Good Mornin'", written by Ben Peters and a hit for Charley Pride. In fact, I don't see any actual writing credits on the package except for the four stated to be written by Liam McLaughlin, so it would be best to remove all of Noel Flynn's writing credits. P.S. Googling further, I found this undated Welcome page for his website, which doesn't seem to be accessible from the current site, and this tells us that he lives in County Meath, in ROI north-west of County Dublin. A pity that he doesn't have a wikipedia page, or very much of a Discogs one
PhilMH SUBS ● 4th Nov 2022		Vinyl Album Diana Ross And The Supremes - Super Supremes	Hi Helen, Discogs has this as 1970 without giving a source, but I'm inclined to think that the second half of 1969 is more likely, as this doesn't include "Someday We'll Be Together", which was released in Germany in November 1969 according to 45cat (and "No Matter What Sign You Are" what released in June 1969).

PhilMH SUBS ● 31st Oct 2022		CD Album Various Artists - Jesus Christ Superstar	Thanks, Carey. This copy looks to be the same as this Discogs entry, which shows BIEM/MCPS rights societies rather than BIEM/GEMA on the one I linked to before. Pressing by Universal M & L indicates that this was pressed in 1999 or later following Universal's purchase of PolyGram and PMDC (the previous name for Universal M & L), as does the third catalogue number 311 000-2, which is in the old PolyGram style (I seem to remember some other MCA numbers in PolyGram style shortly after the takeover). The MCD 11000 number was first used in 1991 or 1992, though (previous European release through WEA was 250 430-2), so we can still consider this to be a 1991 or 1992 release. Funny thing about the barcode is that most of the US and Canadian releases seem to have it as 076731010021, so different from the Elton John disc, but there is a German one too; I can't tell whether it's before or after Carey's copy, but I suspect its after. I wonder whether it would have mattered in Europe and the rest of the world, as Elton John was only with MCA for USA and Canada.
PhilMH SUBS ● 31st Oct 2022		CD Album Various Artists - Jesus Christ Superstar	I don't know that the package is necessarily printed in the USA, MM - it looks to me like BMG in Europe just left the USA text intact and added Europe-specific details like the slightly different catalogue number and the price codes. In a similar vein, WEA in Australia would leave the Warner Bros., Elektra or Atlantic address details on LP covers, add the distribution credit for themselves, and occasionally forget to airbrush out the "Made in USA" text, which has been known to create some confusion about release country at certain discography sites!

I can pin it down a little further, to before February 1993, as it appears in the main Platterlog catalogue in Australia at that time; it didn't make it into any of the weekly catalogue updates before that, though (I hate it when that happens), and it doesn't seem to have scored a UK release, not appearing in the Music Master catalogues.
PhilMH SUBS ● 30th Oct 2022		CD Album Various Artists - Jesus Christ Superstar	Hi MM, this is actually a Europe (and probably International) release, because the first catalogue number shown on the rear insert is MCD 11000 (i.e. in MCA's then European format), and the insert also shows price codes for Germany and France, the BM in the latter code indicating distribution by BMG, which assumed international (non-US) distribution of MCA's labels on 1st April 1991 (as reported in Billboard of 24 November 1990), so a 1991 release at the earliest.

Discogs has this as Worldwide (not that they always get things right, but still...), the package shows Universal International Music B.V. (the division that co-ordinates international domestic releases), and the US rights society ASCAP is also present.
PhilMH SUBS ● 28th Oct 2022		CD Album Ice Cube - Bootlegs + B-Sides	Hi Helen, this looks very much to me like a mismatch of cover and disc, because the catalogue number on the spines is different to that on the disc, and the back cover indicates distribution by BMG, who never distributed Island or 4th & Broadway in the UK - PolyGram was Island's UK distributor at this point (the 524 080-2 catalogue number is in PolyGram's format), and I think BMG would have been a continuation of Island's previous deal with Ariola for Germany (and probably Austria and Switzerland too). The Discogs entry for this barcode shows a very different disc. I would be inclined to hide the back cover, remove the barcode, and change the country to UK, as the text on the circumference of the disc, plus MCPS rights society, suggests that this is a UK release.
PhilMH SUBS ● 22nd Oct 2022		CD Album Asia - Then & Now	This is a 1991 reissue, as it is distributed by MCA, whose distribution of Geffen came into effect on 1 January 1991, following MCA's purchase of the label in March 1990; the original 1990 release through Warner Bros. had a barcode starting with 07599.

Also, the absence of the barcode on any of the images here suggests that this would have been available in a longbox, and longboxes were gone before 1990, making that date suspect - indeed, Schwann catalogues in my possession suggest that this catalogue number was released by December 1987 at the latest.

And The MGs - Time Is Tight	Hi leonard, I think this would actually be the European release, as my US copy of this collection actually has US-made discs. I seem to recall that ZYX-made discs were being distributed by all of Fantasy's European licensees by this time (late 90's), some even found their way to Australia, where they were distributed by Fantasy's long-time licensee Festival.

PhilMH SUBS ● 2nd Oct 2022		CD Album Earth, Wind And Fire - Gratitude	I agree this is not a Japan release, as the catalogue number fits CBS' Europe & Rest of World (excluding US & Canada) convention; Japanese releases tend to have completely different catalogue numbers to any other country, and the CBS label in Japan before 1991 was CBS/Sony, with this album receiving a release on that label in 1985, as seen here.
PhilMH SUBS ● 22nd Sep 2022		Vinyl Album Various Artists - Cabaret	As this is on MCA, this cannot be a 1972 release, 1972 is just the copyright year. Original releases that year were on ABC, Dunhill, Probe or Stateside, with transfer to MCA coming in 1979 when MCA bought the ABC catalogue. Plus, this MCA logo and label design didn't come into use until 1973, and the reverse of the obi shows the JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR movie soundtrack, which was a late 1973 or early 1974 release around the world. Discogs has this as a 1979 release, which I think is most likely correct - I think there's a "P '79" in the bottom right-hand corner of the back cover, and as MCA changed its label design again to the blue sky and rainbow one in January 1980 (possibly later in Japan or other countries), then this could only be a 1979 or 1980 release.
