Richard Vollin 13th Oct 2023 | | Blu-rayThe Blue Dahlia - Shout! Factory | ReviewFrom my Amazon.com review on April 9, 2019
Spoiler Alert -
Forget all the blather about Veronica Lake, I'll tell you who steals this film - hands down...supporting actress Doris Dowling as Alan Ladd's two-timing, slutty wife Helen Morrison.
Her scenes are all too brief, but she is unforgettable.
Quite drunk, dressed in a slinky, shimmering cocktail dress along with a smug attitude, she spills her guts out to her husband concerning the death of their son -
Helen: "I could tell you something about Dickie that would hurt you plenty".
Johnny: "What about Dickie"?
Helen: "It could happen to anybody. I'd been to a party. I had to take Dickie with me, I had a few drinks".
Johnny: "Ah - stop the tears".
Helen: "Alright hero, I was drunk. I was in a car smash, Dickie was killed. I wrote you he had died of diphtheria because I was afraid to tell you the truth. Well - how do you like it?" Helen starts to drunkenly laugh.
Johnny enters the bedroom and removes his automatic from his suitcase, then a physical confrontation ensues...while astride a stool with her legs in a provocative pose, Johnny pull his gun and aims it at her (see attached images);
Johnny: "That's what I ought to do, but you're not worth it".
Now, I ask you, what scene in the film did Veronica Lake have that tops this?

Richard Vollin 13th Oct 2023 | | Blu-rayMy Gun Is Quick - KL Studio Classics | From a 2K transfer. Lots of location shooting in and around L.A. Not on the par with "Kiss Me Deadly" (1955), but very engaging and worthy of your time.

Richard Vollin 13th Oct 2023 | | DVDCrime Wave [1954] - Warner Home Video | Essential film noir viewing. Jean Gillie in "Decoy" is as ruthless and greedy as Leslie Brooks is in "Blonde Ice" (1948) two years later. "Crime Wave" benefits from excellent location shooting in stark, seedy L.A. environs and the point-blank acting of Sterling Hayden. Inspiration and precursor to John Ellroy's "L.A. Confidential" (1997) with Ellroy and film noir expert, Eddie Muller providing over-the-top commentary together.

Richard Vollin 24th Jan 2023 | | MagazineKicks | Rated 10/10Kicks magazine was a short-lived phenomena.
Each issue was a stuffed-to-overflow Farmer's Almanac of informative articles and interviews, from a revolving door of regular contributors, and free lance writers. It's focus ran the gamut of all things American Rock 'n' Roll; Hillbilly, Rhythm & Blues, Rock-A-Billy, Doo-Wop, Surf and 60s Garage music.
Sophomore issue #2 cemented it's place at the dawn of the 1980s by disseminating the apocrypha celebrating the sounds and gyrations of juvenile delinquency, teen-age pregnancy and high school drop-outs to twang, reverb, fuzz and distortion. 87 page tome of essential reading from cover to cover. Obtain immediately - at any cost!

Richard Vollin 14th Aug 2017 | | BookArthur Lyons - Death On The Cheap | Rated 8/10"Most books on the subject of film noir cover only well-known movies in their filmographies, such as The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, Out of the Past, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and so on. But these were all A productions. What Mr. Lyons has done is dust off those B films that have been sitting on studio shelves, those which rarely, if ever, appear on television, even at three in the morning, and has some fun doing it. Thankfully, the terms 'mise-en-scene,' 'aesthetic reversals,' and 'rhetorical form' do not appear in his text."

Richard Vollin 3rd Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumElton John - Live From Rose Hall, New York September 6, 2006 | From the CD liner notes:
On September 6, 2006, Elton John and his band played an exclusive set of songs at Rose Hall, an intimate theatre on Manhattan's Upper West Side that is affiliated with the legendary Lincoln Center. All of the proceeds from this performance went to benefit The Elton John AID Foundation, a not-for-profit that has donated over 120 million dollars funding AIDs/HIV related projects. These songs are a document of that special night.
From eltonjohn.com:
This unique CD was recorded on September 6, 2006 at New York’s Rose Hall, when Elton and the band debuted the new album The Captain & The Kid. It includes three songs from the album and two Elton classics: "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," "Postcards From Richard Nixon," "The Bridge," "I Must Have Lost It On The Wind," "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word." These live recordings were never made commercially available. Rocket member gift 2007.

Richard Vollin 2nd Aug 2017 | | CD AlbumPentagram - First Daze Here Too: The Vintage Collection | The second set of early recordings by Pentagram released on the Relapse label.
There's enough extant material to release another anthology, including recordings of Bobby's early band; The Shades of Darkness, and his superb bedroom recordings among others. It remains to be seen as to whether or not Relapse want to pursue another one. It's my understanding that their Murray Krugman produced Columbia demo has been located, and that alone would justify a third collection.
This contributor uploaded a selection of images by noted photographer Cameron Davidson, that were used to create the CD artwork for this release.

Richard Vollin 31st Jul 2017 | | Cassette AlbumRag Doll - Rag Doll | Rag Doll was a Northern Virginia cover band that formed in late summer 1994, and performed locally in Virginia, D.C., and Maryland. Consisting of Heather Schultz-Meloni (late of the Inhalers, and Jet Set), her husband Ned Meloni (Ice Water Mansion, Jack Starr, Brian Jack), Kevin Burnes (brief association with Dokken), and Joe Hasselvander (Pentagram, Jack Starr, Raven). Their live show was usually divided into an acoustic set, and one electric, dominated by contemporary and classic covers, with a few originals mixed in. Their self-titled tape was never commercially available, except at their shows.
Ned described the band as a '90s version of Humble Pie.

Accompanied by percussionist Ray Cooper, they performed a series of eight shows; four in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), and four in Moscow.
The concert footage was filmed 25-28 May at the (now demolished) Rossiya Hotel Concert Hall.

Richard Vollin 25th Jul 2017 | | VHSElton John: Visions - Embassy Home Entertainment | This got off to a rather belated release, probably due to post production, licensing and distribution snarls, and the usual politics and red tape that surround the music biz. Obviously this is a video album version of The Fox which had been released in May of '81. Way too late for MTV to give a Tinkerbell's tw*t about, and Elton's latest album; Jump Up! was already six months old. And it didn't help that Embassy Home Entertainment had a list price of $49.95 for both Beta, and VHS formats. That was a steep price for any fan to have to shell out, and it contradicted Elton's long standing belief in value for money. Believe me - that's the reason you didn't see this tape flying off the shelves at Tower Records when it came out.

Disc manufactured by Philips and Dupont Optical (PDO), etched Made in U.K. by PDO.
Exhibits severe bronzing, oxidation, and minor flaking along the edge.

Even at this stage of corruption, the disc plays perfectly on my various playback equipment, and PC.

Richard Vollin 23rd Jul 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Tommy | Yes...there was a movie. And I remember it well. All my friends (Mike, Patty, and Ann K., Carmella C., Danny D., Brian and Kim R., Mike S., Linda and Lori P.), and myself walked with folding lawn chairs next door to the Sunset Drive-In Theatre in Woodbridge, Virginia (you can Google that up), and set up camp in front of the screen. It played there for at least a two week run in the summer of '75. Did we need a car speaker?...hell no, you could hear the film for several blocks! Here's how I saw it: this film soundtrack was a boon for Polydor, and for good reason; Elton was fast approaching critical mass, and every teenager alive in the United States knew it. When the song Pinball Wizard took off, it was played to death as if it were a hit single. I suppose Polydor was under immense pressure to market it as such too, but didn't - and I know why; it would have killed the sales of their double album overnight. They were savvy and calculated, as Elton had hit singles literally falling out of the sky that year. If you wanted Pinball Wizard on vinyl, then pony-up the cash and buy the soundtrack. Great tactical move on Polydor's part, and too bad for us kids stuck with an overpriced LP for want of one song.
I thought it was a cool movie though.

I ordered this through JEM Imports, via Rainbow Tree Records in 1975, an independent record store in Alexandria, Virginia. This, and Looking On, opened a lot of doors for me. Roy Wood is a living legend. The MOVE occupy a permanent home in my iTunes library, as well as my iPhone, and (of course) my vinyl collection.

Richard Vollin 21st Jul 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElton John - More Rock From Elton | This was the first bootleg LP I ever purchased. I got it mail order through Rare Records in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They used to advertise their catalog in the back of Creem, Circus, or Rolling Stone. The date of the performance on the cover insert is incorrect (no surprise). The sound quality is fine for an audience recording from this era.
According to the San Bernardino Sun, the Swing Auditorium was demolished following an airplane crash on 11 September 1981. The NOS Events Center now occupies the former site.

Richard Vollin 21st Jul 2017 | | CD AlbumWayne Hancock - The South Austin Sessions | Reviewfrom the Bloodshot Records website:
The South Austin Sessions is a six song LIMITED EDITION CD-EP that was available only on our web site and on Wayne's tour.
This EP shows off Wayne's more jazzy side. Hot guitar and trombone help Wayne expand his sound. Three swinging originals and three choice covers add up to a neat little record for your collection. It's like three great 78rpm records without the hiss and scratch. Don't miss a fabulous cover of "Stormy Weather" featuring Rebecca Snow on vocals.
