Various Artists - B.E.F. Presents Music Of Quality And Distinction Volume One
Review
B.E.F. (British Electric Foundation) were Martin Ware and Ian Craig Marsh formerly of The Human League and later Heaven 17.

This album featured, as well as Glenn Gregory (BEFs vocalist), several artists providing vocals to classic pop/rock songs backed with synthesisers and drum machines.

Most noted is the contribution from Tina Turner. Whilst the song is not one of my favourite Motown tracks she herself sounds great and provides a great version. Following this album her label (Capitol) got behind her and her next single "Let's Stay Together" (produced by Martin Ware) was heavily promoted resulting a career reboot (at the grand old age of 43).

Billy MacKenzie is a like or loath vocalist but provides (in my opinion) two good vocal tracks. The late Paula Yates' contribution is a bubblegum squeaky pop vocal version that is quiet annoying whilst Paul Jones (as expected) pumps out a great version of the Motown classic.

Glenn Gregory is a fine vocalist and the cover of Lou Reed's Perfect Day is very good.

Jack White - Acoustic Tour 2015 Box Set
In 2015 Jack White embarked on an unusual, acoustic tour. Hitting the only five states in the US in which he had yet to perform — the wild environs of North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho and Alaska — White and his acoustic ensemble of Dominic Davis, Fats Kaplin and Lillie Mae Rische delivered jaw-dropping performances to the previously JW deprived terrritories.

Each show was announced only hours before curtains lifted and tickets were only available in the venue box office, 1 per person, for $3. "No tradesies." Rampant online speculation, guesstimation and divining ensued, and those who were lucky and/or cunning enough to secure a seat were admired by all.

The shows had several standards and rules set ahead of time by White: no amplifiers, only ribbon microphones used, and no monitors on stage.

Review
Being of a certain age I can remember watching the majority of these tracks on TOTP. 40 years on and a few have stood the test of time and remain quite listenable whereas a few are perhaps best forgotten.

Rubettes - 70s pop fodder, nothing too memorable; Gloria Gaynor - a reasonable cover better than some but nothing compared to the original; Jim Gilstrap - more fodder; Glitter Band - forgetting the Gary Glitter connection not a bad glam rock/pop tune; Showaddywaddy - marmite to some but for me the early singles were exciting to see on the TV (yes I had a pair of brothel creepers and drainpipes which still looked good when punk came in); KC - white boy funk, back in style again; Wigan's Chosen Few - this tune was the Northern Soul tune that broke the charts and made it main stream (for a few years a least); Bay City Rollers - kings of the world for a few brief years, dated but still better than what followed (westlife et al); Mac and Katie - sweet sickly soul; George McCrae - not a bad tune, holds up well; Sweet Sensation - again sickly soul, Sad Sweet Dreamer is a much better single from them; Trammps - not a bad piece of 60s/70s style R&B/soul; Love Unlimited - more sickly soul that hasn't dated well and finally Slade - still pure class!

Review
An album made of what appears to be re-recordings and live tracks but with no notes on the sleeve or label to confirm when and where recorded.
I can confirm A1 and all of the B side are live. A3 & A4 sound close to the originals but have been stereo enhanced. A6 definitely sounds a re-recording.
Overall a record worth skipping - you're better off looking for the original 45s.

The Missing (2014 - 2016)
Rated 8/10
Season 1 tells over 8 episodes the story of a young english boy that goes missing whilst the family holiday in France.
I personally thought that it mirrored many of the issues I had read regarding the real life case of Madeline McCann - english parents dealing with a foreign police force that works differently, the language difficulties, police officers with their own personal agendas and the dealings with journalists to name just a few.
It is a compelling slow burning drama that kept me engaged and wanting to see the next episode.
A great British drama that is worth a watch.

A teacher is shown a time portal that takes him back to 1960.
He aims to investigate the period running up to the assassination of JFK and to stop them before the killing takes place.
In the three year period leading from his arrival in 1960 he gets sidetracked by life in the early 60s and the fact that past does not want to be changed.
The mini series was based on the Stephen King book but written and developed for TV by Barbara Carpenter.
I have read the book and enjoyed it and it is a joy to see a Stephen King title filmed well. The story is perfect for a mini-series and the story line has a plenty of interest ranging from historical fact, a bit of a love story and plenty of drama, suspense and action.
Makes you think, other than saving JFK, what you might do if you were able to head back to the 1960s - maybe wait until 1963 and buy a handful of those black and gold Parlaphone records by that new band The Beatles to bring to the future.

Fairly predictable (and flawed) plot revolving around a troubled individual who gains some personal redemption by protecting a young girl from an assassin.
First movie I have seen Thomas Jane in a leading role and he plays the character well. Fishburne is the bad guy, very dark, moody and convincing.

Cucumber (2015)
Rated 8/10
Shown on UK Channel 4 the show has lots of adult themed content (swearing, nudity, etc.). The core subject (gay life in Manchester) can also be off putting to some however I found this series very enjoyable, at times very funny, as well as addressing some very serious issues.

The drama follows Henry Best, a gay middle aged insurance salesman addressing his own issues regarding his relationships and sexuality. Following a split with a long term partner he moves in with small group of much younger men who seem to live the lifestyle he thinks he so desperately wants.

The series consisted of eight episodes all written by Russell T Davies.

A lttle bit of trivia; the title was inspired by a scientific study into the male erection which divided the erection into a hardness scale consisting of tofu, peeled banana, banana, and cucumber.
