RCA Redesigns Disk Label
NEW YORK, Dec. 19. -- RCA Victor has re-designed its disk label and will introduce the new label next month on a few new albums. As the diskery's present stock of printed label forms runs out, the entire line of disks on all speeds will carry the new design.
Basic change is the use of a four-color plate of the trademarked dog, which will be much larger than the one now used on disk labels. In effect, the newly-designed label will appear to be much more like the one used on HMV disks. All Victor disk products will eventually carry the new design.

I still remember James Earl Jones' voice seemingly enunciating "rebel spies" as "rubble shpies."

Billboard announced such debut (retailing initially at $3.98) in its Jan. 8, 1955 issue. {Images #1211247 & 1211248} would have dated to 1957, {Images #1888933 & 1888935} to 1958-59. W.B.lbl 28th May 2024 | ![](//images.45worlds.com/t/ab/kenny-loggins-with-jim-messina-sittin-in-ab-t.jpg) | Vinyl AlbumKenny Loggins With Jim Messina - Sittin' In | I should note that I have a Pitman copy with Santa Maria metalwork with labels as on {Images #958462 & 958463}. Two characteristics give this away:
- The center hole drilled onto the labels was 7.2mm (0.2835"), rather than Santa Maria's 7.4mm (0.2913")
- The margin diameter (the most raised area of the outer record diameter) was at 299.5mm (11.7913") rather than Santa Maria's then standard of 298mm (11.7323")
As you can guess by these small details, I have more than one way to pinpoint where a copy was pressed - and why looking at photos and scans is in no way the same as seeing a pressing up close and personal. Pitman, at that point, was still using Queens Litho to print their label blanks (presumably Terre Haute as well); the label blanks Santa Maria used came from Bert-Co. Both were using 70 lb. C2S paper which was made by Newton Falls Paper Mill. (Nashua Corp. made the 70 lb. C1S Litho Dry Gum Label paper stock - most likely 25" x 20" - that was used to print label blanks for styrene 45's that the Pitman and Terre Haute plants turned out.)
