han enderman 11th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMNat Gonella And His New Georgians - The Man Who Comes Around / Never Took A Lesson In My Life (1941) | Co FB-2538 - The labels just added are Swedish and need a separate entry. It is not UK, as indicated by the bottom legend "Manufactured for Columbia ... London", and I've seen others with this label type and font (of the catnr) that apparently were Swedish (most likely I saw them on Swedish ebay 'Tradera'). Other examples are Co(S) FB-2062 by Lecuona Cuban Boys 1938 and Co(S) FB-3096 by Victor Sylvester 1945.

han enderman 11th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMMaurice Chevalier - Louise / Valentine (1953) | HMV JO-382 - Date should be corrected to 1953 (possibly 1954). 1929 is recording date. To get an indication of the release date (from some immediately available label images), JO-301 by Tampa Red is a 1951 recording (Victor E1- mx), JO-342/354/383 by Oscar Peterson have an E2-mx, and JO-379/384 by Hank Snow (E3-VB-0615/611) are from 1953, so this Chevalier reissue JO-382 dates from the 1950s and probably from 1953/54. In addition to such contemporary recordings, the JO series also contains earlier jazz like Ellington (1940s) and Waller. Looking at later JO issues, JO-417 is by Eddy Arnold (E3-VB-2965) and JO-439 is a 1954 Hank Snow recording (E4-VB-5576). - The date of the label pictured here is later, as this is the last JO label type, without dot in the catnr. - Some JO release dates in this website (see Mike Thomas' website for HMV JO listing) are:
JO-18 Hampton (1939), 1948
JO-22 Tommy Dorsey, 1948
JO-89 Fats Waller, 1948
JO-276 Piano Red (E1-mx), Oct 1951.
JO-298 Piano Red (E0-mx), Apr 1952.
JO-383 Oscar Peterson, 1954 [now corrected to 1953, Mod.]
JO-384 Hank Snow, 1953
JO-396 Eddy Arnold, 1954
JO-400 Eddy Arnold, 1954
JO-404 Eartha Kitt, 1953 [now corrected to 1954, because JO-396 is securely dated to 1954. Mod]
JO-421 Eddie Fisher, 1953 (E2- 1952 Christmas recordings), so not unlikely released 1953 [Correcetd to 1954. Mod.]
JO-464 Bruce Low, 1957
Is there a source for these dates? JO-276/298 show the month of release, and is Oscar Peterson's JO-383 from 1954 (and not 1953)? JO-406 is shown as a 1953 release, but such dates may have been assumed or copied.
I searched for "JO" but then I did not find "J.O", so there may be more info in this website. Is it possible to find all releases of the JO series in all spellings?

han enderman 11th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMWoody Herman - The 1946 Super Rhythm-Style Series No. 27 & 28 (1946) | Par R-3006 - This record was released with 3 main label types, all present (everything should be rearranged):
#1 - catnr without dot; short rim legend - (serif font of catnr)
#2 - catnr with dot; short rim legend - (sans serif font of catnr)
#3 - catnr with dot; long rim legend.
There is however additional variation in publishers' logos. The 6 labels already present can be called
A #1, 2, 3a; B #1a, 2b, 3a. Additional variants are A #3c; B #1b, 2a, 3b (all four added).
The change of the B-side logos is: B #1a New World & Chappell; 1b Hansen added; 2ab & 3a same (but different order); 3b different Chappell logo. The A-side logos are Chappell & Morris, but surprisingly the Chappell logo is never the name in a square; on A #3c the Chappell logo is absent. So there may be more label variants. B #2a was coupled with A #1 and is thus the earliest variant of the B #2 type.

han enderman 10th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMOzzie Nelson - I Still Get A Thrill / I Don't Mind Walking In The Rain (1930) | Br(F) A-8834 - Indeed it is French (and should be corrected), but the French A-8000 series is uncommon and presumably selected from the German series, which has the catnr at 7 and never uses "Disque". [mod - updated]

han enderman 9th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMLen Fillis, Al Bowlly, Sid Bright - Anita / Progressions (1930) | Co(E) 5698 - original labels added (should be moved up).

Dance Orchestra - It's An Old Spanish Custom / Give Yourself A Pat On The Back (1930) | Co(E) 5739 - label variant of B-side added, which is probably the 1st pressing, as the title is followed by the description in smaller print on the same line.
|
han enderman 8th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMJ. Dale Smith - Fourteen Songs From "When We Were Very Young" / The King's Breakfast (1927) | Co(E) 4107 - is the date (Oct 1927) a typo? Release date of Columbia 4101 is Oct 1926.
|
han enderman 8th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Ipana Troubadours - Blue Bonnet You Make Me Feel Blue / Baby Face (1926) | Co(E) 4098 - images added of 2 label types. The later variant (#2) was added first, as it is of better quality.
|

han enderman 4th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMJesse Crawford - Sleepy Time Gal / You Forgot To Remember (1926) | HMV EA-25 - image added of later B-side variant.
|
han enderman 3rd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Philadelphia Orchestra Conducted By Eugene Ormandy - Emperor Waltz, Op. 437 (1943) | HMV ED series - @mike gann - That's because it is Australian (to be corrected).
|
han enderman 3rd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMPaul Robeson - Lazy Bones / Carry Me Back To Green Pastures (1933) | HMV B-8010 - 4 label variants added (both sides, but #3 B is missing). There are now 5 main label types (#1-5, with different label blanks), and one subtype (#5a & 5b, with different publ. logos). Differences are: nipper logo (#1-2 coloured); rim legend (see begin of legend at 9; nor/or at 1); Made in England at 3; publishers logos as illustration or name in rectangle. B-sides of #5a & 5b are almost identical, but the position of the cat.nr above the title is slightly different, so I have added both. - Images should be reorganized.
|
han enderman 2nd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMCharley Lincoln - If It Looks Like Jelly Shakes Like Jelly It Must Be Gelatine / Ugly Papa (1928) | Co 14332-D - images of West Coast pressing added. This still has the earlier label type. Side B has the characteristic large serif font, but the A-side has "normal" sans serif font, as the title is too long for the large font. The definitive proof is the G-1 stamper. Note the different lay-out of the title, which therefore contains commas. - Shouldn't the composers be listed as "Smith, Cook"? -
I have also added a possibly better image of the Bridgeport B-side.
|
han enderman 2nd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMBarbecue Bob - Waycross Georgia Blues / Chocolate To The Bone (1928) | Co 14331-D - common labels added, plus A-side West Coast label.
|
han enderman 2nd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMBessie Smith - Sweet Mistreater / Homeless Blues (1927) | Co 14260-D - added better readable B-side image. But it is nice to see a Biddle St., St. Louis shop sticker.
|
han enderman 2nd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMBessie Smith - Dyin' By The Hour / Foolish Man Blues (1928) | Co 14273-D - label images added (copy from B6/A1 stampers), plus A-side West Coast label (G-1 stamper), which still has the earlier label type.
|
han enderman 2nd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMGertrude Perkins - No Easy Rider Blues / Gold Daddy Blues (1928) | Co 14313-D - B-side image added, from A2 stamper.(reverse A3).
|
han enderman 2nd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMClarence Williams' Jazz Kings - Sweet Emmalina / Any Time (1928) | Co 14314-D - added better image of B-side, plus label images of the West Coast pressing, which still has the earlier label type. The record also exists as a blue wax pressing.
|
han enderman 2nd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMLillian Glinn - I'm Through (Shedding Tears Over You) / I Love That Thing (1930) | Co 14559-D - label images added (A-side very worn, but composers can be read). Both sides from A-1 stampers.
|
han enderman 2nd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMLillian Glinn - Shake It Down / Where Have All The Black Men Gone (1928) | Co 14315-D - B-side image added.
|
han enderman 29th Feb 2024 | | 78 RPMTerry Gilkyson And The Easy Riders - Marianne / Goodbye Chiquita (1957) | Co 40817 - added are: 1) 3 images of the Bridgeport printing, as A exists in 2 variants, without (error) and with vocal mentioned on label. 2) 2 images of the Hollywood printing of A, differing in the distance between title and matrix number. - The present image of A can best be hidden, as it is a not so good image of the 2nd Bridgeport printing, difficult to read when enlarged, and more clear on discogs.
|
han enderman 28th Feb 2024 | | 78 RPMAvery Parrish - After Hours / Walkin' Blues (1946) | Alert 200 - A/B images of 2 label variants (#1 & 2) added. On 200-B #2 the credit is in narrow font, as on Bascomb's 201, and therefore I added it as the later version. But 201-204 have a narrow font and 205-206 have a broad font, so probably the original release of 200 has the narrow font and the type I called #1 is the later pressing. - Note that the image on discogs of 200-B #1 is a "corrected" and blackened version of the same copy, as shown by the faintly visible scratch at 5.
|
han enderman 27th Feb 2024 | | 78 RPMPaul Bascomb - Leap Frog Blues / Lady Ginger Snap (1946) | Alert 206 - Label images of both label types added: #1 - 2 towers; #2 - 1 tower. Type #1 can also be seen (large images) and heard on archive.
|
han enderman 27th Feb 2024 | | 78 RPMPaul Bascomb - Nona / Tell It To Me (1946) | Alert 205 - label images on discogs.
