han enderman 3rd Jul 2024 | | 78 RPMJim Reeves - What Were You Doing (Last Night) / Wagon Load Of Love (1953) | Abbott 115 - A-side image added of 2nd edition (B-side lacking). - With 115 Abbott started a new label type, with the logo in bold sans serif font, label name Abbott / Record Co., and address. Last known release with this type is Abbott 126. The next type has added "A Fabor Robison Production" (first known new release is 135).

han enderman 3rd Jul 2024 | | 78 RPMRudy Grayzell - Looking At The Moon And Wishing On A Star / The Heart That Once Was Mine (1953) | Abbott 145 - A-side image added with side number 145a (at 3) printed below the copyright details. Presumably this misprint is the first edition (reverse not seen). Abbott 145 is the first release of a new label type, with 6636 Hollywood Blvd. address replacing 1653 N. Argyle Ave.

han enderman 3rd Jul 2024 | | 78 RPMJeffries And His Rialto Orchestra - Mercenary Mary / Honey, I'm In Love With You (1925) | Aco 15777 - A-side label image added. - There are typos (titles, comp) in the track details.
|
han enderman 3rd Jul 2024 | | 78 RPMFloyd Cramer - Fancy Pants / Five Foot Two, Eyes Of Blue (1953) | Abbott 146 - images added of original and later label variant, differing in the layout of the description. Broad descriptions occur on earlier Abbott issues, and descriptions of 4 or 5 short lines are on later issues.

han enderman 1st Jul 2024 | | 78 RPMLouis Armstrong And His Hot Five - Hotter Than That / Savoy Blues (1928) | OK 8535 - all known additional label variants added (= #2-3, 5-7 and West Coast labels #W including misspelling Savory Blues; #1 & #4 were already present), plus a cleaner image of #1 A.

han enderman 1st Jul 2024 | | 78 RPMLou Preager - Pretending / Some Day You'll Want Me To Want You (1946) | Co FB-3250 - the images with prefix "FB.", not followed by a space, are the original pressing, and should be moved up. The last one known to me is FB.3477, while the next layout of the prefix is "F.B. " (with 2 dots and space) on F.B. 3479/82. The last issue known with the 2-line legend below the label name is FB-3454, whereas 3456 has the subsequent 3-line legend. Also the use of "text only" logos instead of pictorial logos is a later development.

han enderman 1st Jul 2024 | | 78 RPMPaul Whiteman - Ol' Man River / Make Believe (1936) | Vic 25249 - images added of the orig. scroll labels (#1) and of the later ring labels (#2); #2 B from different pressing plant is already present. - Reissue of Victor 21218, which was recorded 11 & 27 Jan 1928 and released 9 Mar 1928.

han enderman 29th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Three Boswell Sisters - Gee, But I'd Like To Make You Happy / Don't Tell Her (What's Happened To Me) (1930) | OK 41470 - label images added, plus A-side image of West Coast pressing (B lacking). - An article on the Boswell Sisters, White Face, Black Voice by Laurie Stras, 2007, discusses Don't Tell Him (as they sing) on p.229. - Both sides can be heard on archive, as tracks 21/22 in a chronological Boswell Sisters 1925-1931 compilation, that starts with a surprising blues vocal (track 1) from 1925 and transcriptions from 1930. And there is also a discography.

han enderman 29th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMJoe Venuti's Blue Four - I've Found A New Baby / Sweet Sue (1930) | OK 41469 - A-side image added of later red label pressing (B-side lacking).

han enderman 27th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMTed Lewis - Where'd You Get Those Eyes? / That's Why I Love You (1926) | Co 667-D - 2 images added. #1 A to replace the less clear copy; and #4 B, a West Coast pressing - as shown by the G-1 stamper in the runout at 12 - that preferably should be retained with the runout details. On available images with stamper details, low numbers occur with label type #1 (A2, B3, C1, C9, D12, E15, B20); higher nrs with #2 (B22/27, ?-24); and highest nrs with #3 (C40, B50). The West Coast disc shows G-1 stampers; its labels are the same as #3 (reverse is also available). It is remarkable that the West Coast label is not type #1. Also we see here that East & West Coast labels still have the same large round font. On later releases (should be researched when this starts) font, layout and - when possible - credit are usually different.

han enderman 27th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMPerry Como - Wanted / Look Out The Window (And See How I'm Standing In The Rain) (1954) | Vic 20-5647 - Trying to list the earliest colored nipper labels in my previous comment, I overlooked 20-5675 by Eddie Fisher, where W.B.lbl gives the Billboard text on the design change. In this 20- series, that is the 2nd occurrence of the new label. The original label of 20-5739 has the small uncolored nipper, but another pressing has the colored nipper. Maybe these are from different pressing plants?

han enderman 27th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMTed Lewis - Where'd You Get Those Eyes? / That's Why I Love You (1926) | Co 667-D - cyeaman, interesting uncommon labels you added. Maybe they quickly printed some labels on old stock before changing to "electric" labels. Can you give the stamper(s) of the images?

han enderman 27th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMJohn Gordy - Isle Of Capri / Bye Bye Blues (1954) | Vic 20-5750 - label images added of Disc Jockey copy (from archive, where the music is available) plus A-side of regular issue (both sides on discogs). - Not clear why the description says "promo only".
|
han enderman 27th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMPerry Como - There Never Was A Night So Beautiful / Hit And Run Affair (1954) | Vic 20-5749 - label images added; from different copies on archive, where the music can be heard.

han enderman 27th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMPerry Como - Wanted / Look Out The Window (And See How I'm Standing In The Rain) (1954) | Vic 20-5647 - images added (incl. clearer A-side). - Apparently this record was selected to introduce the new colored label design on 78 rpm. It is not known with the circle label and also Disc Jockey copies, very common at the time, are not reported. In this series, the last circle label release is 20-5750 (May1954), and the first colored-nipper issues after 20-5647 are 20-5748 (Eddie Fisher), -5749 (Perry Como), & -5752 (Tito Puente). Vic 20-5739-46 have circle labels and 20-5753/56-57 have nipper; 20-5743/51/54-55 unknown (only known from dj copies).

han enderman 26th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMEmpire Military Band - Smiles / Moments Of The Dance (1918) | Empire 6233 - label images added. Another image of the A-side shows in the run-out 4138-A, which is also the mx of Puritone 5653, Puritone Military Band: Smiles (and thus a Pathé master).

han enderman 26th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMFred Fairbanks - It's A Long Way To Berlin / Over There (1918) | Empire 6203-B image added.

han enderman 26th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMEarl Johnson And His Dixie Entertainers - John Henry Blues / I Don't Love Nobody (1927) | OK 45101 - Added 2 images of later label types, #2 B & #3 A. Original label type already present.
|
han enderman 25th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMEarl Johnson And His Dixie Entertainers - Ain't Nobody's Business / Three Night's Experience (1927) | OK 45092 - There are 4 label types, of which #1 & #4 are already present. Added are #2 A/B, #3 A, and #4b B. Maybe #3 B does not exist or is rare. Type #2 B is the common variant, and copies coupled with #1 A & #3 A are known. A variant of #4 B has only a small distance between title and credit and therefore is called here #4b B. A disc with this layout variant on discogs has a "normal" #4 A-side.
|
han enderman 25th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMUnited States Navy Band - Anchors Aweigh / All Hands (1928) | Vic 21296 - images of 4 label types (#1-3, 5) added; #4 is already present. Source of #1 (Oakland version) & 5 (RCA Victor) is archive, where the music is available. Of type #2 the B-side is still lacking. Types #3 & #4 are common; another #4 from a different pressing plant is on discogs. Remarkable that the mx is still mentioned on the postwar RCA Victor labels.

han enderman 25th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Happiness Boys (Billy Jones And Ernest Hare) - Giggling Gertie / Must You Wear A Mustache? (1928) | Vic 21529 - I have no idea. It is especially odd, as the mx.nrs are so prominent and were invisible before and after. When they stopped, they had just released some much earlier recordings and this you can see in the mx.nrs. The mxs are also shown on Japanese Victors, and maybe also elsewhere (will check that). Really strange is that they still appear on labels of much later repressings (for ex., Victor & RCA Victor 21296) !

han enderman 25th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Happiness Boys (Billy Jones And Ernest Hare) - Giggling Gertie / Must You Wear A Mustache? (1928) | Vic 21529 - Good that the original, uncropped scans have been retained as hidden images. They show the matrix numbers in the wax (45801/800) instead of the catalogue numbers. In this series (10" black label popular) the mx.nrs are shown on the label (at 3) and in the runout (at 6) on issues 21252 (mx 40541) - 21654 (mx 46967), released 30 Mar/6 Apr-Oct 1928. This range is probably exact, as adjacent issues 21251 and 21655 do not show these mx.nrs. The mxs on the labels are printed on the very first issues in a round font (21252-60), but then in narrow italics (21261-21654). Victor 21255 shows the round font and is dated 30 Mar 1928; 21249 & 21256 are dated 6 Apr 1928.
|
han enderman 25th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Happiness Boys (Billy Jones And Ernest Hare) - Giggling Gertie / Must You Wear A Mustache? (1928) | Vic 21529 - undamaged labels added, from archive. West Coast labels are on discogs.

han enderman 25th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMBix Beiderbecke - Jazz Classics Series, No. 27 & 28 (1942) | Par R-2833 - 2 label variants of Margie added, #3a & 4. Type #4 is a late pressing, with prefix R followed by dot; apparently rare as only this A-side image has been found. Main type #3 exists with 2 A-side versions: #3a with 2 publ. logos as on #2 (rare), and #3b with 3 publ. logos, as subsequently on #4.

han enderman 24th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMJon And Sondra Steele - They All Recorded To Beat The Ban / My Happiness (1948) | Damon 11133 - The record is very common on ebay. I checked 15 copies, and found that types #1a & 1b are about equally common. They are not mixed on the discs; #1a is never coupled with #1b. One copy is slightly different and has the composers names printed more compact (#1c), but the images are mediocre. None of these 15 copies was type #2. - I have added better images of #1a and the "oval" images can be hidden. The name "Vic Damon" is scratched in the runout, as is visible on the #1a B-side scan.
|
han enderman 24th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMJon And Sondra Steele - They All Recorded To Beat The Ban / My Happiness (1948) | Damon 11133 - 2 label variants added. On the first (#1a A/B) the word "Featuring" is positioned more to the left. May be this is the 1st edition (one copy seen), and on the (more common) later printings the word was moved to the center (see its position above SONDRA). On the other variant (#2, B-side only known) the credit says "AND" instead of "and". The earlier release 11130 has credit "JON and SONDRA STEELE", so "AND" may be an original 1st edition misprint or a later repressing.
|
han enderman 24th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMJon And Sondra Steele - They All Recorded To Beat The Ban / My Happiness (1948) | Damon 11133 - The recently added labels are Canadian and need a separate entry. It is the only Canadian Damon I have seen. It is characterized by the font (common on Canadian issues) and the absence of "Kansas City" below the label name. - Discogs incorrectly lists the Canadian labels as US and does not show images in its entry for the Canadian release.

han enderman 24th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMHarry Parry And His Radio Rhythm Club Sextet - The 1942 Super Rhythm Style Series, No. 11 & 12 (1942) | Par R-2832 - The last golden Parlophone is the next record, R-2833 with Bix's Margie, released 1 Feb 1942. There are several (I think 3) golden label types. Par R-1194 is Second New Rhythm Style Series No.1 Garland Wilson / No.2 Armstrong, Weather Bird.
