Johnny Rowland - Memories Of When You Were Mine / Ohio Baby (1952)
Now here’s a conundrum, I have had a second copy of Johnny Rowland’s “Ohio Baby” (Republic 7023) for several years, just how long I can’t say for certain. I do know that I have never played the second copy of the record, so you can imagine my surprise when I finally got around to giving it a spin, and I found that “Ohio Baby” a pleasant mid tempo Hillbilly bopper, had mysteriously transformed into a fiddle led instrumental. A closer inspection showed that rather than the RCA pantograph stamp in the deadwax, there was, handwritten, DOT M 6056 in the wax! It transpires that DOT M 6056 was the master number assigned to Tommy Jackson’s rendition of “Cripple Creek”, which was released on DOT 1138 as part of the DOT Square Dance 78rpm Album (DOT Album DF-101) “Tommy Jackson Plays Square Dances“. And, before you ask, the Flip Side of The REPUBLIC disc is Rowland’s “Memories Of When You Were Mine”.
