FYI: Solid shellac is more fragile than glass by any heuristic measure.

Metrolite, deccalite etc were vinyl. Polystyrene existed in that era but wasn't durable enough for the heavy tone arms of that era. They are more rigid because they used less plasticizers in the formula. The formulas wasn't particularly proprietary since none of them invented any plastics- ever. however, the brand names metrolite et al were trade marked.

Vinyl 78s debuted in the last 1940s originally for radio servicing because the audio was superior, but as electric record players became more popular, particularly because of lighter tracking, they began marketing vinyl (PVC) 78s.

This makes sense because vinyl was already in use before the debut of 45s and LPs. The new technology there was finding ways to press grooves closer together.
