LaurenceD SUBS 28th Oct 2019 | | 78 RPMTed Vesely, Lee Countryman, Morty Corb, "Smokey" Stover, Ralph Harden, Bill Wood - Peter And The Wolf / Tin Roof | No info to be found for this release, or the label for that matter. I did run across something in Billboard March 11, 1950, an article on p.47 "Dixieland Pace in Hwd. Upbeat" about the popularity of trad jazz bands in Los Angeles clubs: "... Ted Vesely is at Glendale's Tom-Tom".
[update - The Tom Tom club had two locations: 6266 Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, and 806 E. Colorado Blvd. in Glendale. International Musician July 1950 lists a new Tom Tom record label having the same address as the Glendale club]
There is one more Tom Tom release (1002) featuring the same lineup.

LaurenceD SUBS 14th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMBetty Furness - Good Advice From Betty Furness About Your New Westinghouse Laundromat / Good Advice From Betty Furness About Your New Westinghouse Laundromat (1954) | I would estimate around 1954 based on those numbers
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMJohnny Lane - Ten More Miles To Go / Ten More Miles To Go "With Mule Shouts" | This appears to be a private recording. The thin flexible disc, plus the additional hole, suggests that is was probably cut directly on a home recording device.
Both tracks feature Johnny accompanied by a guitar. Quite different from the version of this song released on MGM which includes additional instrumental backing and vocal chorus.

LaurenceD SUBS 27th Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMEverett W. Hall - The Cyclotronist's Nightmare Part 1 / Placement (1948) | It does look generic, Bob1951, except that it has an unusual configuration: four sleeve pages, two of the 12" size and two of the 10" size.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMEverett W. Hall - The Cyclotronist's Nightmare Part 1 / Placement (1948) | This album may have included an insert; if so I don't possess it. I think that the album might be titled Defendimonium - A "SELECTION OF SONGS" but am not sure.

LaurenceD SUBS 5th Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMPop Chalee - Taos Round Dance / Taos Clown Song | Pop Chalee is certainly more known for her paintings and murals than for her musical activities, but anyway here she is as a singer.
The Canyon label was founded in 1951; I found a mention of this release in a periodical "Midwest Folklore" ca. 1955, so that's the best I can narrow down the release date so far.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMRed Raven Orchestra - Old MacDonald Had A Farm / Little White Duck (1956) | I had a copy of this release along with the magic mirror when I was a toddler. It's long gone now, but I recently came across two of these in a thrift store. Searched the entire store for that mirror, but it was nowhere to be found :-(
|
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Apr 2019 | | 78 RPMRed Raven Orchestra - Tootles The Tug / The Little Red Engine (1956) | Set the date to 1956, and cat #s to M1 / M2. The series continued at least through M-32. Also included full disc scans as the design is quite interesting.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Mar 2019 | | 78 RPMTommy Reynolds - Two Hearts That Pass In The Night / Everything Happens To Me (1941) | This short-lived label should not be confused with the 1930s Hit Of The Week label. This record is composed of a not-so-flexible plastic material, somewhat similar to styrene but less brittle.
Lacking definite release date information, I tentatively set this to 1941, as both of these songs were released by various notable bands in that year.

LaurenceD SUBS 27th Mar 2019 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Sound Effects / Sound Effects | Thanks for all that information xiphophilos. In case there is any doubt, this is indeed a standard shellac 78.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Mar 2019 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Sound Effects / Sound Effects | I cannot find any information about this record.
Each side is a different series of train sounds along with a conductor calling out things such as "All aboard!" and "Lionel Express running on time!". There is also a narrator describing various features of Lionel trains. I can only speculate, but this doesn't sound like something that would be available for purchase; maybe these recordings would be played in the Lionel stores for patrons to hear.

LaurenceD SUBS 17th Mar 2019 | | 78 RPMHenry Nathan And His Cathay Hotel Orch. - One Night Of Love / Remember My Forgotten Man (1934) | I don't have enough information to narrow down the date for this, but it must be from about the mid-1930s based on the film songs chosen. Henry Nathan (born Henry Nathanowitz) led a band in residence at the Cathay Hotel in Shanghai that was quite popular from around 1933 to 1937. After Japan occupied Shanghai, Nathan spent some time in a prison camp, and during that time led a band comprised of camp members.

LaurenceD SUBS 26th Feb 2019 | | 78 RPMDuke Ellington And His Kentucky Club Orchestra - East St. Louis Toodle-O / Birmingham Breakdown (1927) | I'm not really sure whether this was released in late '26 or early '27.
There were quite a few recordings of the A-side tune released in the 1920s, including these:
(most info found here)
Brunswick 3840 / Duke Ellington and His Kentucky Club Orchestra
"East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" / recorded March 14, 1927
Columbia 953-D / Duke Ellington and His Washingtonians
"East St. Louis Toodle-O" / recorded March 22, 1927
Victor 21703 / Duke Ellington and His Orchestra
"East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" / recorded December 19, 1927
Okeh 8638 / Lonnie Johnson's Harlem Footwarmers

Cameo 8182 / The Washingtonians

LaurenceD SUBS 8th Feb 2019 | | 78 RPMRaushan Ara Begum - Aesi Sanvari Saloni Gori / Ja Main To Se Nahin Boloon | The artist is usually referred to as Roshan Ara Begum.
The titles shown in Shahmukhi script are a problem for me, but I'll keep researching...
|
LaurenceD SUBS 8th Feb 2019 | | 78 RPMKhansahib Bare Ghulamali Khan - Yad Piya Ki Aae / Naina More Taras Rahe | The artist is better known/transliterated as Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. And the a-side is usually referred to as "Yaad Piya Ki Aaye".
|
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Jan 2019 | | 78 RPMSir Lancelot - Calypso (1949) | The first 4 sides were previously issued on Keynote Album K-126. Sides 3 & 4 are also from Keynote single K-548, and sides 5 & 6 are from Keynote single K-559.
I tentatively based the release date on the listing at bsnpubs. All I know is that Mercury had apparently acquired the entire Keynote catalog by April or May 1948, according to a Billboard article from Feb 28, 1948, p.22.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Jan 2019 | | 78 RPMJimmy Grissom - S'Help Me I Love You / House Of Fire (1952) | For this label, I don't know whether the 'A' or 'AA' side was the intended top side.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Dec 2018 | | 78 RPMAllan Jones - The Donkey Serenade / Giannina Mia (1938) | Yes; given the same cat#, we consider it to be a later pressing of that release.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 29th Nov 2018 | | 78 RPMGeorgia Gibbs - The Trolley Song / Wish You Were Waiting For Me (1944) | I don't know if Maestro Music managed to issue any additional singles; I have not found evidence of any. According to Billboard they had several Freddie Martin recordings in the can, but had to scrap the releases due to a dispute with Victor.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Nov 2018 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - The Old Scotchman's Broadcast Of Thomson's Home Run Part 1 / The Old Scotchman's Broadcast Of Thomson's Home Run Part 2 | This is not the home run call that I'm used to hearing in sports highlights ("The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the Pennant!" from Russ Hodges at WMCA (New York)), but the one from the broadcast heard nationwide on LBS called by Gordon McLendon ("The Old Scotchman", and founder of LBS) (see the Wikipedia page for more about that).
The entire game was recorded by LBS. This excerpt begins with a brief introduction by an unidentified narrator, then McLendon takes over with Thomson coming to the plate, and Don Newcombe about to be relieved by Ralph Branca. After the fatal blow is struck and the call is made, Gordon lets the crowd noise take over. Later, underneath the pandemonium, you can hear him say "Well, I'll be a suck-egg mule".
|
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Nov 2018 | | 78 RPMHarry Raderman's Jazz Orchestra - La Veeda / Railroad Blues (1920) | I moved two 1920 Lyric releases from the Khoury's-related Lyric over to here, where they clearly belong. Maybe we should rename this label to something like Lyric [Lyraphone] ?
|
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Nov 2018 | | 78 RPMJimmie Lunceford - Margie / Like A Ship At Sea (1938) | Added labels for the original single release. 1938 sounds about right for this, but I believe that the "For Dancers Only" album (from which label 1633760 originated) was released sometime afterwards, around 1940 I think.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Oct 2018 | | 78 RPMBillie Holiday - Strange Fruit / Fine And Mellow (1939) | Added alternate labels. The recording dates shown on these make me think that they are later pressings, perhaps from 1946 as mentioned in this Billboard ad.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Sep 2018 | | 78 RPMBoswell Sisters - Cheek To Cheek / Top Hat, White Tie And Tails (1935) | Personnel (from https://guymcafee.com/):
- Russ Case, Ed Wade - trumpets
- Will Bradley - trombone
- Artie Shaw - clarinet, alto saxophone
- Martha Boswell - piano
- Carl Kress - guitar
- Dick Cherwin - bass
- Stan King - drums
|
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Sep 2018 | | 78 RPMLalo Guerrero - No Me Vuelvo A Enamorar / Florecita (1948) | There was also a later release of "Florecita" by Guerrero, as "Don Edwards", on Imperial 4001 (b-side). A different recording, presumably with updated lyrics by Al Stewart.
Thanks to slholzer for mentioning the The Strachwitz Frontera Collection site, an excellent resource of info about Mexican & Mexican/American recordings.
