Bing Crosby With The Mills Brothers - Shine / Dinah (1933)
The two songs on this record, along with "My Honey's Lovin' Arms," showcase Bing Crosby the "jazz singer" as opposed to Bing Crosby the "crooner." Bing was the second notable "scat" singer after Louis Armstrong and one of the few white jazz singers to appropriately use it on a record. Of course, the greatest exponent of "scat" singing was Ella Fitzgerald, who embraced bebop and used her "scatting" talents well on such records as "How High the Moon" and "Flying Home." Also featured on the two songs on this record are The Mills Brothers, who used their voices to emulate the sounds of actual musical instruments, and it's not easy to tell what's a voice and what's an real instrument. 100% talent on both sides of this 78 rpm disc, which is actually a reissue of sides from two previously issued Brunswick discs.
