Preston Love (alto sax) and Devonia Williams (piano) from Johnny Otis’ Orch with a ten piece band and Charles Maxwell vcls. At this stage Johnny Otis seems to have made his own production deal with Syd Nathan and the Valjo publishing imprint created to give Otis a share of royalties. Nathan was arguably the shrewdest of the independent record men, using the likes of Ralph Bass and Johnny Otis as roving talent scouts cum A&R men with a share in publishing royalties and a degree of autonomy as incentive.
