scrough 16th Jan 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Band Of H.M. Coldstream Guards - Old Comrades March / Stein Song (1930) | According to Frank Andrews this 78rpm was deleted from the UK catalogue in April 1959. But like many others, it may have appeared in a foreign HMV catalogue, and so manufacture may have continued beyond that date. He also notes that B 4501 to B 4998 were issued outside the UK.
scrough 10th Jan 2023 | | 78 RPMPhiladelphia Symphony Orchestra - Casse-Noisette (Nutcracker) Suite (1927) | Promoted earlier black labels to top. According to {this discography}, black labels were replaced by red in 1932.
scrough 30th Dec 2022 | | 78 RPMRichard Crooks - Preislied / Gralserzählung (1927) | Many countries other than Germany used German as one of their main languages. This is therefore intended for release in one of these countries, so moved to UK export.
scrough 29th Nov 2022 | | 78 RPMTheodore Chaliapine - Oh, Could I But Express In Song / The Blind Ploughman (1929) | Recording Angel logos normally appear when composer copyright has expired (examples here and here). But the Russian A side copyright did not apply to Malashkin (d.1902) at this time. See Copyright law of Russia
scrough 10th Nov 2022 | | 78 RPMArthur Peel - Playing The Game In The West / Bits Of Humour (1910) | B: Arthur Peel - Bits Of Humour
Both tracks composed Formby
scrough 10th Nov 2022 | | 78 RPMArthur Peel - I Was Standing At The Corner Of The Street / Sequels (1911) | B: Arthur Peel - Sequels. Composer for both sides G Formby.
scrough 1st Nov 2022 | | 78 RPMSymphony Orchestra - Symphony No. 6 In B Minor (Pathétique) (1927) | Two things need further comment. I'm trying to put a list of the HMV numbered 78rpm 'Albums' (around 470) together. But many 'Sets' were also issued. Most Albums and Sets were issued in straight couplings (as here) and auto-couplings. Many of the earlier auto-couplings were issued twice, with different catalogue numbers for each issue. Never simple is it ??
scrough 25th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMCharlie Kunz - Charlie Kunz Medley Of Strauss Waltzes (1938) | Something awry in your logic Whyp? Mike Thomas again: 'Rex was owned by Crystalate ... In March 1937, Decca took over Crystalate ....
scrough 20th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMZonophon-Ensemble - Die Erstürmung von Lüttich, I. Teil / Die Erstürmung von Lüttich, II. Teil (1915) | By a co-incidence, the UK TV programme 'The Repair Shop' restored a set of four Angels carved by Belgian refugees in the first few years of WW1. It was estimated that 250,000 had fled to the UK.
scrough 18th Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMEddy Arnold - That Wonderful Mother Of Mine / Mother (A Word That Means The World To Me) (1949) | The MH series are Export. See the WERM labels extract downloadable {here}.
scrough 1st Oct 2022 | | 78 RPMMusique De La Garde Republicaine - Paris (1908) | Changed date from 1935 to 1908. Kelly database says recorded 1907, and the label fits that date much better.
scrough 30th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMMantovani - Ramona / Intermezzo (1955) | Sweden, see the WERM labels extract downloadable {here}. Updated!
scrough 29th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Mary Had A Little Lamb (1890) | More details of these 5-inch discs may be found on the Archeophone website. A leaflet from a London store circa 1892 can be seen here.
scrough 28th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMAlhambra Orchestra - Morris Dance (1899) | The dates given on the original submission of 1896 and 'recorded 10 Dec 1895' are incorrect and impossible for a Gram Co. Berliner (blame popsike source?). The Kelly database gives the correct date of 12 Oct 1898 (American recorder Fred Gaisberg uses USA date format on early records), the recording artists as The Alhambra Orchestra and no matrixes were used at this time, the 3-1 or y-1 being a code as yet not deciphered. It was released in the 2nd Gram Co list of 22 Feb 1899. I've updated
scrough 27th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMInternational Concert Orchestra - My Hero / Unrequited Love (1930) | The Recording Angel area is obscured in many earlier releases by a stick-on label showing that the copyright fees had been paid. {Example} from August 1929.
scrough 26th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMInternational Concert Orchestra - My Hero / Unrequited Love (1930) | The 'Nymph' is the Gramophone Co.'s original trademark ('Recording Angel') so perhaps your additions are earlier labels?
scrough 25th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMM. Marcel Maas - Toccata Et Fugue En Ut Mineur | LFX is a French and Belgian Columbia series, see the WERM labels extract downloadable {here}
scrough 24th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMDorsey Brothers And Their Orchestra - Mary Ann / My Melancholy Baby (1928) | Sources: A: Okeh 40995. B: Okeh 41032
scrough 24th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMFeodor Chaliapin - Twofold Litany "Glory To Thee, Oh Lord" / The Creed (1932) | DB 1701 was released in September 1932 as part of the British section of the DB International series. But, of course, any HMV branch could choose to add any of this series to their catalogue. Fuller details can be downloaded {here}.
scrough 22nd Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMThe Royal Cremona Orchestra - Give Me A Little Cosy Corner / The Heart Of A Rose (1918) | There were no issues in November 1918 (end of WW1?) so this entry and a few subsequent have been changed from Nov to Dec. Also no issues in Jan 1919.
scrough 21st Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMFoster Richardson - Song Of The Bow / Devonshire Cream And Cider (1922) | One of the marketing methods was monthly supplements of records, usually new releases but sometimes topical like Christmas, Easter, or a particular celebration event. These were issued by many companies throughout the 78rpm period (see Columbia {here}). This was supplemented by annual catalogues.
scrough 20th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMFoster Richardson - Song Of The Bow / Devonshire Cream And Cider (1922) | Bright green labels in this style suggest that you have a pressing made Oct 1931 or later.
scrough 17th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMBand Of H.M. Scots Guards - In A Monastery Garden / In A Persian Market (1924) | Hate to disagree, but the text after the matrix is 'Characteristic Piece' not Pitch.
scrough 15th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMRoyal Albert Hall Orchestra - Peer Gynt Suite – Morning (1911) | This record was re-coupled with 0718 (Death of Ase) as D-156,and issued in 1920. We also have D-157 on site, which was a re-coupling of 0719 and 0720 (Anitra's Dance/Hall of the Mountain King) by The RAH Orchestra/Landon Ronald.
scrough 15th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMRoyal Albert Hall Orchestra - Peer Gynt Suite – Morning (1911) | The black labels are HMV's cheapest line around this time, with the reds being 'Celebrity' and much more expensive. Many black label single sided were reissued as double sided in the B,C,D and E series starting around 1912 (B,C mostly 'Popular') and after WW1 (D,E more 'Classical'). So perhaps this was one that wasn't re-coupled, or re-coupled later.
scrough 6th Sep 2022 | | 78 RPMPhyllis Robins - It's A Hap-Hap-Happy Day / Goodnight Children Everywhere (1940) | @steviebgoode: Matrix numbers are CE-10271-1 (Goodnight ..) and CE-10272-1 (Hap-Hap-Happy), both recorded 5th Jan 1940.
scrough 24th Aug 2022 | | 78 RPMMadame Clara Butt - Abide With Me (1915) | The Dame Clara Butt artist entry already links the various titles (Miss,Madame, Dame, etc) into a single listing. Her previous titles (eg Madame) are also available as individual listings, and these refer to the main listing. Perhaps our artist title at the date of recording should be used? One of the mods has already changed this record from Dame to Madame.
scrough 23rd Aug 2022 | | 78 RPMMadame Clara Butt - Abide With Me (1915) | @The Vinyl Emporium: Don't confuse the pressing date with the release date. Later pressings would have 'DAME' on the label. Seems like you have an earlier label version - which would have had 'MADAME' so pre 1920? Image promoted
scrough 5th Aug 2022 | | 78 RPMEnrico Caruso - Love Is Mine / Pourquoi? (1924) | Xiph has summarised this well. UK HMV continued to release 'Celebrity' records as single sided until 1924, and the face numbers given are the catalogue numbers for these releases. 4-2205 is already on our database, and 7-32012 would have been released sometime during World War 1.
scrough 25th Jul 2022 | | 78 RPMAlexander Prince - The Darkies' Holiday / Harry Lauder's Pops (1908) | The artist here is Alexander Prince, and this is an 11" disc, released in Oct 1908, with a catalogue number 878. Pathé often released records with details missing. See the Pathé section at the end of this Alexander Prince Discography.
