John McCormack - I Hear You Calling Me (1921)
This video runs a little slow - to be correct the disc needs to turn at 84 RPM! Still don't think he bettered this recording over the years, but the slow speed makes it sound a bit off.

Garde Republicaine Band - Salut À Copenhagen March / Le Tram March (1919)
I've got a French Pathé 11" vertical cut disc of this era (which I must scan and upload here once I've cleared my backlog!) with a mirrored date scratched in too, but it's not the recording date in that case - in fact it's about 10 months after recording. Perhaps the fact that it was a USA Pathé/Perect recording that's been sent to France and processed to a vertical cut 11" disc whereas the American release was a 10" lateral disc has something to do with that - even though that 10" lateral disc wasn't the master!

Enrico Caruso - La Donna E Mobile (1908)
Those HMV catalogues are awfully keen to put a great many things up at 80 RPM (or higher, in this case!) that don't belong there. Who knows why, did they want people to listen faster for "more brilliance", or did the marketing department have absolutely nothing to do with the recording department other than working for the same company?

René Aagaard's pictorial discography, with speeds taken from Aida Favia-Artsay's "Caruso On Records" work, puts this session at 76.92 RPM.

Enrico Caruso - Ideale (1907)
80 RPM? Noooo. I've had a flick through those HMV catalogues too, and a lot of them are keen to put a great many things up at 80 RPM that most certainly don't belong there.

René Aagaard's pictorial discography, with speeds taken from Aida Favia-Artsay's work, puts it at 76.92 and there it sits beautifully in A Major.

Best take those HMV catalogues with the salt crust of a margarita and rely on more modern researchers for speeds :)

Lionel Belasco - Luna De Maracaibo / Juliana (1933)
Another record which is a bit tricky to date. The 5000-X is a continuation of the 2000-X Spanish series that began back in 1923, but specifics on this series are hard to find. Browsing through Volume 4 of Dick Spottswood's Ethnic Music on Records shows the series plodding along roughly chronologically through the early 30s at this point in catalogue numbers.

If this disc was issued in 1933-4 it would have had a different label to the one pictured - this is a later pressing from after the CBS takeover.

Again, if anyone can help with specifics please do post!

Frankie Trumbauer - My Pet / Borneo (1928)
A bit tricky to date, the Argentinian Odeon 193000 series all seems to be overseas recordings, so it's a bit tricky to find a local matrix number and get an approximate date on that.

193151 was recorded in Berlin in early 1928

193152, 153 and 154 are Spanish recordings, which appear to have been made in 1927 - they have matrices between SO 4239 and 4346, and Marston Records places SO 4600 in February 1928.

These lead me to believe that this record belongs to 1928, but if anyone has any better information, please post it!

John McCormack - I Hear You Calling Me (1911)
Take 1 recorded March 10, 1910 and issued only under the "Patents" label, with five lines of text and no line under 64120.

Take 2 recorded March 16, 1911 and issued under both the Patents label with three lines of text and a line under 64120, and on the Batwing label.

Take 3 recorded June 16, 1921, and I have not yet located a copy on 64120 but was issued under this number.

Take 1 and 2 sound quite similar, Take 3 has quite a different sound.

Interestingly, the DAHR notes that Take 1 used "a finer-threaded lathe, thus more grooves per inch and a longer-playing record." Certainly it is a long side for a 10" disc, clocking in at 3:47 (Take 1), 3:49 (Take 2), and 3:40 (Take 3). Perhaps this caused a problem that needed to be rectified with another take made so soon after the first.

Frankie Trumbauer - Clarinet Marmalade / Singin' The Blues (1927)
Despite "Made In England" on the label, this is a French issue - it's in the French catalogue series and has "Aiguille" printed on the label - "Needle", to distinguish it as a regular lateral cut record to be played with a steel needle, as opposed to a vertical cut disc to be played with a gemstone.
