Biography - 49th State USA Founded in 1946 by George K. Ching, the owner of Honolulu's "Maestro" record store. In the July 31, 1948 issue of Billboard (page 44), 49th State advertised its first 10 titles (#49-58) to buyers on the mainland; the last two issues, though, were actually released with different titles. In its November 6,1948 issue (page 45), Billboard reports that Tempo Records has acquired the right to distribute the 60 sides so far produced by 49th State Record Co. under its own Tempo label in the continental United States. It does not look as if this ever happened. Moreover, 49th State's releases may have reached #60 by late October 1948, but since their first release was #49, that still amounts to only 11 discs. In 2013, Territorial Airwaves devoted a show with sample recordings to the history of this label: http://territorialairwaves.com/index.php?page=30&id=141. The original label showed a map of the Hawaiian islands in purple on a red background with black writing. After cat. nr. 149, the writing changed to a whitish silver. In the early 1950s, a new label was introduced, featuring a hula dancer. « Discography Edit This Biography : Biography Credits
