Biography - Aeolian-Vocalion    USA

The label started in early 1918 with vertical-cut (hill-and-dale) records (first 1200, then 12000 series). Since the vertical-cut records didn't sell very well, production switched to lateral-cut records (14000 series) in 1919.

Aeolian-Vocalion originally produced gramophones that could play both vertical- (hill & dale) and lateral-cut records. Around summer 1917, they began recording their first records in their Aeolian Hall studio in New York City. The first vertical-cut records came onto the market around March 1918 (TMW March 15, 1918, p. 6), but the official launch of the new label took place in May 1918 (TMW, May 15, 1918, page 68).

The earliest labels (until at least September 1918) feature no prices and list the phrase "Aeolian Hall New York" under the company name. By 1919, that phrase had disappeared, and prices were listed to the left of the spindle hole.

The word "Aeolian" was dropped from the name in 1921, and the label became Vocalion. Numbers higher than 14232 in the popular series belong there. Other series started by Aeolian-Vocalion and continued under the new name include a 22000 and a 24000 series.
