Biography - Ajax    USA

U.S. record company based in Chicago, IL. (active Oct. 1923-ca. May 1925).

Founded and produced by the The Compo Company Ltd. of Montreal, Canada, the Ajax label was intended to break into the American race record market. Records were pressed at the company's Lachine, Quebec plant, but distributed solely in the United States.

The label released two series, a 1400-1600 series of titles recorded in Compo's Montreal studio, and a 31000 series for titles recorded in Compo's New York studio. Some masters were also licensed from The New York Recording Laboratories (Paramount label) or the Regal Record Company, Inc. (Banner and Regal labels).

Bad management and a lack of demand from American buyers meant that the label was discontinued after little more than 1.5 years. Some of its masters were later anonymously reissued on Pathé's Perfect label.

A discography of the label by William R. Bryant is available here.
