Biography - Bell [Hawaii]    USA

Active from 1944-ca. 1952, Bell Records was created by William Bell Fredlund and Alice Pualeialoha Davis Fredlund, his wife, and named after Bill's middle name.

The Fredlunds built a recording studio in a former military warehouse across the Ala Wai Canal from Waikiki. The brilliant Young O. Kang became their recording engineer, and Alice’s brother, Willie, served as talent scout.

The label issued the first solo recordings of Alfred Apaka, Andy Cummings, and Gabby Pahinui.

Releases with LKS-prefix were recorded at Leo Kupina'i Studio. Early labels are blue with Bell Records in a silver Gothic script. Starting in 1947, the label expanded its distribution to the US mainland under the guidance of Bill Meyer; labels show a native Hawaiian in an orange mantle on a yellow background.

There was also a short lived cooperation deal in October 1947 with the United Artist Record. Later releases, however, were manufactured and distributed by Coast Records.
