Biography - Conqueror    USA

Label Story

The Conqueror label was active from 1928 to 1942. It was produced solely for distribution through the Sears Roebuck & Co. mail order catalog. Originally owned by the Plaza Music Company, it became part of the American Record Corporation family of labels when ARC was founded in January 1929.

The earliest labels were gold on a red to dark brown background and featured two trumpet-blowing heralds in front of the Conqueror logo drawn in Gothic letters. Throughout 1928, this label said "Sears, Roebuck & Co. The World's Largest Store" at the bottom. In 1929, this was replaced with "Made in U.S.A." The phrase "Not Licensed For Radio Broadcast" was added in 1932.

Around April 1935, the original herald label was replaced by a design that placed the label name in a scroll cartouche, topped by a crown with three stars. Around August 1937, the phrase "Electrically Recorded" is replaced by "Full-Range Recording" and a licensing text is added to the margins. After September 1939, the matrix number moves from the left side of the spindle hole to below the catalog number at the bottom of the label.
