Los Angeles, CA label started in 1944 by Leon Rene. By December 1949, the label is in financial trouble and Rene is forced to sell most of its masters for the benefit of his creditors; in Jan. 1950 the label ceases operations. The original labels are blue, then black; by 1948, the label color shifts to red, and in mid-1948, the company introduces a red label with a slanted Excelsior logo.

Started in the early 1940's and used sparingly until it came to life commercially in 1944. Early 1946: Rene and distributor Jack Gutshall's Excelsior business is praised for effectiveness and sales success.
Late 1946: Rene splits from Gutshall who is none too pleased and is quoting contracts terms.
July 1949: cost cutting is in operation; all West Coast activities cease; staff reductions and pressing discs on lighter plastic to cut freight costs to far-flung customers.
