Biography - Gennett USA American label founded in Richmond, Indiana, by Harry, Fred, and Clarence Gennett, managers of the Starr Piano Company. In October 1917, the company released its first vertical-cut (hill & dale) discs. Around mid-1919, the company switched to lateral-cut discs. In December 1926, the company introduced electrically made recordings, the Electrobeams. Until December 1921, labels list only "Richmond / Indiana" at the bottom of the label. Around December 1921, this is briefly replaced by "Gennett Records / Richmond / Ind.", see Gennett 4791 (released Dec. 1921). Starting in January 1922, labels say instead "Division of / The Starr Piano Co. / Richmond / Ind." Around October 1922, the labels begin to list the matrix number to the right of the spindle hole. Around May 1924, labels also list a date code below the matrix number. 524, for example, means released in May 1924. Between 1925 and 1926, Gennett released a Race Record series (3000 catalog number block) The Great Depression led to an almost complete halt of production after 1930. Until 1934, Gennett only produced the occasional private recording. In 1935, the Starr Piano Company sold some Gennett masters and the Gennett trademark to Decca Records. In October 1944, Joe Davis acquired the rights to the Gennett label name and began issuing new records, see notice here. « Discography Edit This Biography : Biography Credits
