Biography - King USA Cincinnati label founded in 1943 by Syd Nathan that played an important role in the development of rhythm & blues, country music, and bluegrass. NB: From April 1949 to mid-1952, King had its A sides marked “AA” and B sides marked “A”. The earliest King labels (number 500 from November 1943 to number 543 from July 1946) feature the crown at the top in front of a hatched background and show a framed licensing text at the bottom of the label. Between August 1946 and January 1951, licensing text surrounds the entire label. In mid-January 1951, this text disappeared, and the circle around the label became thinner. 500 /1000 series (‘Hillbilly’, C&W; as of Mar 1953 also Pop): #500 in Nov 1943; discontinued in Oct 1955, highest #1512. 4000 series (‘Race’, R&B; as of Nov 1955 also C&W, Pop): first #4100 in 1945 on Queen sub-label; first #4175 on King in Sep 1947; followed by 5000 series. 15000 series (Popular, Jazz): #15000 in Apr 1949; final #15225 in Feb 1953. 5000 series (General): #5000 in Nov 1956; last 78rpm #5245 in Aug 1959; continued on 45rpm.
