Biography - Rex [Hollywood]    USA

Small label run by Hollywood, CA record store owner Maurice A. Rapoport between 1948-1949 when he lost a law suit against London Records over the rights to the name "Rex." The label reissued bootleg copies of older jazz, but also Charles Mingus, Jay McShann, and Illinois Jacquet.

Detailed label bio

Small label run by Maurice A. Rapoport, owner of the Musical Capital Service record store in Hollywood, CA. Rapoport called his label first "Metro," then, when MGM threatened to sue him over trademark violation, "Rex." In April 1949, he lost another trademark law suit against London Records, owner of the British "Rex" label (Billboard 4/30/49, p. 18), which forced him to changed the label's name to "Rem". Rapoport promised, but failed to pay royalties to his musicians. In 1956, he lost an appeal and was sentenced for tax evasion (source).

"Rex" offered Spirituals (100 series), Bop Combos (25000 series), popular, bop, and race music (28000 series), and a very small Race Boogie series (29000 series). Other prefixes were 23000 (solo vocals?) and 27000 (vocal groups?).
