Biography - Savoy    USA

Los Angeles, CA-based label specializing in Jazz, R&B and Gospel, founded by Herman Lubinsky in 1942.

The Savoy label has one series that starts at 100 in December 1942.
It ends rather quickly around 150 in April 1944.
It was replaced by a series that starts with 500 in September 1943.
There is a gap between 899 & 1100 in the second half of 1953.
There is also a gap between 1199 & 1500 in late 1956.
Around 1560 in February 1959, the 45rpm took over.

There is also another series in the gap from 901 until at least 935, running between 1946 & early 1949.
In the same gap, there is another series running from 1001 until ca. 1075, released in 1945 and 1946.

In addition, there is a 55xx series that started in August 1944 and ended around April 1949. Last number known so far is 5561.

The earliest labels, used from 1942 to ca. June 1947, show a jazz band on top; later labels instead show a quaver (eighth note) logo.

In the May 22, 1948 issue of Billboard (p. 24), Savoy announced that they were introducing a new material for their records that contained no shellac or other imported materials and was cheaper than shellac compounds.

Between February and May 1949, the type of music is listed in the note head of the quaver.

Starting in November 1949, the name of the unbreakable material (vinylite) introduced in late 1948 appears on the labels in the phrase "Sav-O-Flex Unbreakable Under Normal Use."
