Biography - Standard Disc    USA

Chicago-based mail-order label, active from 1904-1916.
Label bio

Starting in 1904, Robert John's The Standard Talking Machine Co. in Chicago, IL, produced records with a 0.5-inch wide spindle hole (suitable only for their own phonographs) and distributed them per mail order. All recordings came from the Columbia catalog. In 1916, Standard merged with several similar labels (Busy-Bee-Record, Harmony Record and United Record) to form the Consolidated Talking Machine Co. of Chicago.

The earliest Standard Disc Record labels list as company address 200 Monroe St in Chicago, and composer and titles are at first rubber-stamped, later typewritten into a white field. On later labels, the address changes to 198-200 Monroe St. Starting in 1912, the address becomes Dearborn & Harrison Sts., and soon afterwards the earlier black-and-silver labels are replaced by black-and-gold labels. In 1914, both Standard and Harmony Disc Record labels add decorative concentric rings that are spaced so they can be used as drilling guides for the larger spindle holes common to both labels (1/2" for Standard, 3/4" for Harmony).
