Biography - United Artist USA Label Story Label Story John Clein President of this Hollywood, CA, label at 6605 Hollywood Blvd. active from July 1947 through to March 1948. United Artist Records, Hollywood, "was whipped together" from a variety of smaller record firms, including Avon,Hucksters, Rhapsody,, Excelsior, Eagle, Minor, Hits, Variety, Urban, and Bell of Hawaii (Billboard, Jun. 19, 1948, p. 15). In the fall of 1947, the firm also absorbed bankrupt Enterprise Records (Billboard, Nov. 8, 1947, p. 36). The original idea was to provide better distribution for small independent companies By April 1948, Clein was being sued by Bebe Daniels for non payment and in May 1948, United Artist Records was in enough financial trouble to be forced to sell all its holdings to satisfy creditors.
