Biography - Vogue USA Label Story Vogue Picture Discs Time line SAV-Way Industries Detroit. President and inventor of the picture disc is Thomas Saffady. Oct 1945 Vogue picture discs, part of Sav-Way industries, announced as starting. Recording facilities being built and a secret process for making colorful sturdy 10" discs. Dec 1945 Billboard ad says they’ve had a fire but all is fine and January will see discs produced as normal. March 1946 Unveiling of first releases. May 1947 Sav-Way signs a contract with Decca to press vinylite discs. Now back in production after a hold-up due to non-delivery of raw materials and changing presses from 10” to 12” A stop on their own recordings was mooted as they had provided far too much product to their distributors without a chance to sell them. Picture records also to be made for Mercury. September 1947 Receivers say they can save the company, which has assets of 2.2 million Dollars and small debts totaling $750,000. Company is going ahead with pressing work for others in 12” kiddie records for Decca. Lots of people have been interested in buying the company but receivership has cooled all that interest at present. March 1950 Sav-Way workshops and equipment being auctioned of. Saffady keeps record presses for future contract record pressing. December 1954 Saffady dies of Leukemia.
