Bill Haley And The Saddlemen - BiographyCountry-western/country-swing group founded by Bill Haley c.1949-50 as a followup to his earlier group, the 4 Western Aces (a.k.a. 4 Aces of Western Swing). Original members were Haley on rhythm guitar, Billy Williamson on steel guitar, Johnny Grande on piano and accordion, Al Thompson on stand-up bass (later replaced by Al Rex). Beginning in 1950-51 the group began experimenting with recording rhythm and blues songs in a country-western style (their earliest known example being a cover of Ruth Brown's Teardrops from My Eyes, recorded for Atlantic Records in 1950 but not released until 2006). Recorded for Palda Records' Holiday and Essex labels in 1951-52 during which they recorded the early rock and roll tracks Rocket 88 and Rock the Joint. In the fall of 1952 the group, seeing themselves moving away from country-western towards this new sound, changed their name to Bill Haley with Haley's Comets, later modified to Bill Haley and His Comets (q.v.). Some releases used a variant spelling "Saddle Men". « Back to Discography Edit This Biography : Biography Credits
