Dame Clara Butt - BiographyClara Ellen Butt, b. Southwick, Sussex, England 1 Feb. 1873, is now best known by the title Dame Clara Butt, which was awarded by King George V in 1920. Tall and 'statuesque', Clara grew up in Bristol and studied at the RCM in London, where she was heard by Princess Alexandra and came to the notice of Queen Victoria, before whom she first sang in 1892. She married baritone Kennerly Rumford in 1900 and they toured extensively, and had two sons and a daughter. She had probably the most powerful contralto voice of the time and used it to good effect in large concert venues throughout the world. She continued to perform in public and to record, while suffering from the cancer from which she died on 23 Jan. 1936.
