Efim Schachmeister - Biography

  

Chaim "Efim" Schachmeister, born as Efim Chaim Chaissowsky, was a popular violinist and bandleader in Germany in the 1920s and early 1930s. He was born in Kiev on July 22, 1894 and he died in Buenos Aires on October 6, 1944 at age 50.
He studied music in Berlin at the Stern Konservatorium between 1910 and 1913. In 1915 Efim Schachmeister played with the Gypsy-Orchestra Popescu in Berlin.
He also performed at some well known dance locations, like the Hotel Excelsior, Barberina, Palais de Danse, or the Pavillon Mascotte. He received a recording contract from the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft and recorded many tracks, also some relatively hot jazz tunes. Among music lover circles, he became known as the "King of Dance Band Violinists."
Shortly after the year 1933, Schachmeister left Germany for Belgium because of his Jewish background. In 1936 he left Europe forever to life a safer life in South America, as did some of his fellow Jewish musicians, like Ilja Livschakoff, Leon Golzman (better known as Dajos Bela), or Samuel Baskind (better known as Sam Baskini).
